View Full Version : OK, ESPN is just getting ridiculous now

I was just checking the listings on ESPN360 because I thought I might watch a soccer game this afternoon and I see that they are running Pop Warner games today.

I guess in some ways it is the same as running the LLWS but the difference to me is that virtually every kid plays little league at some point (including a fair percentage of girls). I don't think many people watch the LLWS purely for the sporting excellence. There is a factor of nostalgia there that gets people to watch it.

I thought ESPN carrying HS football was sort of pointless -- but this takes the cake, IMHO.

Yeah awesome. Champions League gets fitted right under Pop Warner...utterly ridiculous.

How the heck did Barca lose to Shaktar!?!?!?!

I'm not really worried about Champions League playing alongside Pop Warner - i mean, they do show CL on the teevee. But I just don't know who outside of scouts and family members would take the time to watch a Pop Warner game. There might not be a lot of soccer viewers either, but CL would be first choice viewing for most. Whereas Pop Warner wouldn't even rate for most football fans.

And didn't Barca have first place in their group locked up? If so, they probably had some children in the lineup.

Ahhh...you are probably right. I haven't been following this round all that much, just keepin an eye on Manu and some of the other teams from Premiership. I casually follow other leagues, but my main focus is in English league...

So who do you think will be relegated?

I think it is going to be West Brom, Blackburn and Middlesbrough.

Do you follow the lower English divisions? I follow CCC and check the League One and League Two tables now and again.

I don't know. Stoke City is playing on borrowed time. They have -10 Goal differential and are horrible on the road. I think their bubble will burst and go down with the two that you mentioned...Blackburn and West Brom.

It'll be weird without Blackburn around...

Well maybe you are gonna laugh when you read this, but Stoke are my team. I know their football isn't the best but that is the side I have chosen to support.

That said, I think we are in danger of the drop and the next few weeks will be key for survival. If we can get to 24 points by Christmas, I think we can steer it home. But I think the second half of the season will be difficult because a lot of the 'pedigree' teams near the bottom will be improved through transfers. So I don't look for us to get 2X the mid-way total.

A few years back I got interested in following Chelsea but there came a point where I just got bored of the big four and really the only thing I concern myself with regarding the top four are the Champions League games and watching to see if somebody from the second tier can crack the CL qualifications.

I would love to see Burnley qualify for Europe through the Carling Cup. But I think it comes down to how much ManU wants the hardware.

I think the Bengals, the Browns, and the Lions should be relegated.

The lions should just be donated to Canada. I can't remember where I read this (Bill Simmons maybe). He listed several positives coming out of a transaction such as that.

I would love to see the NFL go to a two tier system. Add Toronto, San Antonio, OKC and LA, then split into a twenty team league and a lower sixteen team league. I'm tired of teams like Detroit getting a free pass.

As I said in another thread, there are too many teams in the NFL. But since contraction isn't financially feasible, they should just expand to 36 and go to two tiers.

Yeah, it was Simmons. He suggested selling the entire state of Michigan to Canada, actually.

So, here's my plan that I hatched during an unfathomably depressing Thanksgiving game in Detroit: If the state of Michigan were a struggling athlete, we'd say, "Man, he needs a change of scenery." Well, why can't we give Michigan a change of scenery? What if we sold Michigan to Canada since it's right on their border?

Think about it. Canada gets the spiritual lift of purchasing one of the 50 states, as well as musicians like Kid Rock, Bob Seger and Eminem, a second NBA and MLB team, two Big Ten schools, another NHL team, its first NFL team and, of course, more territory. Canadians would be flying high ... so high they wouldn't even mind that they were now involved in the WNBA. Meanwhile, America would escape billion-dollar buyouts for the car companies, and if we need a 50th state, we can always use Puerto Rico as long as it doesn't put us over the luxury tax. Michigan natives get universal health care, a fresh start and a chance to feel like they're spending more money than usual with the Canadian dollar. Everyone wins! I'm a genius. Just wait until I become Sports Czar and I talk my man Barry into this.

Oh that's right!

It was pretty comical...
