I figured it'd be easier to just post a thread insted of PMing everyone. Here are my plans for the game.

Arrive at the tailgate lot by 8 am. Yes, 8 am. That way I'll have plenty of time to...drink, gamble, and tailgate, what else??? I usually head into the stadium a few hrs prior to kickoff and this game I'll probably be heading in around 1:30. If you want to come and tailgate with me, my pops, my nephew, and about 4-6 others, feel free to stop by. I'll be in the Mercy Behavioral Health building parking lot where Reedsdale St. turns into Fontella Ave.

Click this site for details.

CLICK STREET VIEW AND YOU"LL SEE THE EXACT LOT!

My buddy John (coming to his 5th game this year from Chicago!) wants to cook but we havent decided what is on the menu. I'll be honest, I dont tailgate for the food, I tailgate for the beer/good times. I'll have the grill so if you want to cook something, bring whatever you'd like.

Another must---bring some cash. We gamble at our tailgate. We play double-elimination tournaments of cornhole and a game called shut-the-box (dice game). The past two weeks, I've gone into the stadium with more cash than I came with.

Of course, you don't have to gamble, but we'll all peer pressure you, so JUST DO IT!

Our cooler space is limited, so I would suggest bring a disposable cooler if you can.

Add to the thread and lets game this thing going. 1st, beat the *Pats...then we'll tailgate it, SN1 style..

DAMN! You get there at 8am! That's when I plan on quitting the partying from the night before. LOL I'm going to be there for sure. I'd like to put some $$$ in pot for beers even if we only drink a few as starter fluid/hangover relief. This has the makings of a blast!

Oh and another note, if anyone wants to meet us for a drink or two the night before drinks are on me...we normally go to Margarita Mama's or the strip. Let me know, IT IS NOW ON!

I'm glad you provided a few more details on the exact spot of the lot. That will help me figure out where to park.

One question: Will the "SteelerNation" banner be visible/present to identify the exact site? Either way, we will probably find it. We just want as many details as possible so we're not missing too much or taking a bunch of time looking.

Above all else, SN1, thank you for inviting us over. Tailgating is always fun and your tailgate looks phenomenal from some of the pictures I've seen.

We won't be coming in until Sunday morning. But we are going to the Pens/Sabres the next night, so we will be there Sunday after the game for a while.

The Ol' Lady and I won't be attending the actual game, but we come down at least once a year to tailgate, so this will be the time we come down this year. Depending on the travel conditions, we may also be in town for the Clowns game. But that will also depend on a lot of other factors: parties, family gatherings, etc.

This will be a blast...even more, it's going 2 B PlanetSteelersStock!!!

I'm not much of a gambler, so I probably will try once or twice. We'll have to see how I do. Haven't had much practice. But it sounds like you've been challenged. We may need to see you at PlanetSteelersStock to see how you match up with SN1!

Buck,
I don't hang the banner in the lot...let me post some pictures of the Chargers game tailgate, so you guys can "get a feel." It is real easy to find. Parking is $30 but well worth it.

The pictures will give us the necessary clues. $30 for parking is steep, but shouldn't be an issue considering we'll be bringing our own stash of beer. It might be worth it so I don't have to lug a cooler any farther than I have to.

Depending on how cold it is, I may be able to bring additional beer w/o the cooler (odds on that are at least 50/50). I'll just get it on the way in. If it's colder than 32 degrees, we should have no problem with enough cold beer.

They do sell gyros in the great hall, but how can you come all the way across the country to the Burgh and not have a Primanti's? (they sell the Pitts-burger & capicola and cheese at the stadium).

As for the tailgate, I still have to talk to my father about it, but we will likely not be able to make it over to parking lot if you folks will be there from 8:00-1:30 or so (that is basically the time period that we are on the road driving from NEPA to SWPA). I don't drink anyway (seriously) and my Dad and I can just grab a bite to eat on the road at some point to break up our trip a bit, so it's no big deal. I definitely want to meet up with all of you folks in the hour or two before kickoff in Nation at the South Plaza. We should hopefully be arriving at Heinz somewhere in the neighborhood of two or three o'clock depending on traffic, parking, etc. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Since you have a small army to feed, you can also hit up the Quaker Steak and Lube booth for a bucket of wings as well. Last time I grabbed food at the stadium, I tried buffalo chicken nachos right on the South plaza. Many options...

Thanks, SN1. We'll see whether we can make it to the tailgate or not, but in any event, we will certainly be there to hang out with everybody in the south plaza.

Just a general question...weren't they supposed to start building the Majestic Star casino over there on the other side of the Carnegie Science Center somewhere? I know Don Barden was having some financial issues the last I heard, so I wasn't sure if groundbreaking and construction ever got underway, but I was just curious since I always park downtown for game and am never on the other side of Heinz where you tailgate.

Agreed. Or maybe some "Hello My Name is ______" tags would be nice. It's much better
than walking around the stadium yelling, "is there an SN1 here? I'm looking for SN1."

Seriously, I wish I had some tickets to this game. I'm done for the year unless I get a
playoff ticket through ticketmasterbater.

Maybe we can organize a tailgate party for a game next year. :tt1

This is an excellent idea!!! If you can get a deal with someone online (Cafe Press, Zazzle.com) for promotional stuff, Planet Steelers swag, etc. that would go a long way toward promoting the site. Also consider, that doing this is a good way to raise funds for the site at the same time you are promoting what we have going on here to others.

Also, Jiggy's idea of earmarking a game for, what I would call, a PlanetSteelersStock is a great way for the people here to meet and greet each other while enjoying the atmosphere of a Steelers home game. Do it early enough in the off-season and that will give plenty of time to create buzz for the event.

Ducats for games are a luxury, at this point, that is just slightly beyond reach. That's why I earmark a "tailgate" game at least once a year.

Name tags would be, shall we say, necessary. Kind of like not having names on the back of the jersey. It's a little more difficult to tell the players without the ID.

But your idea for the tailgate, Jiggs, is an excellent choice. I think it might have been floated here before. But it never hurts to bring up the subject again.

RB: It's too bad that you won't be making down to the tailgate, but it's completely understandable under the circumstances. But coming in for the game is the most important thing.

As I mentioned to Jiggy, the ducats are just slightly beyond the budget right now. When the Ol' Lady is going to school and the Ol' Man (yours truly) is planning to return, you watch the pennies a little.

But, being in Cleveland, we've decided that coming down to simply be in the atmosphere is a harmless and relatively inexpensive way of getting around the game feel and not having a Clueless Clowns Crank drunkenly deliver a verbal beat down. I like having the feeling of being "in" the atmosphere of a Steelers game as often as I can...and coming down for the tailgate is a good way to do that.

You guys do enjoy coming in, though. And when you drive 7 hours, one way to do that, that is surely admirable.

Sorry I missed you guys yesterday. We left around 8:00 a.m., stopped for lunch around 12:45 in Grove City (after a couple of stops to try to fix my malfunctioning windshield washer fluid squirters), pulled into Pittsburgh around 2:45, had to settle for my third choice among downtown garages because they were all full, and stood in line at Gate A for at least 45 freaking minutes while they had 400 people taking tickets but only about 12 guys frisking folks before you could go through the turnstiles. I walked up and down the railing in the South Plaza about 3 times and could not find SN1 or Costanza's crew anywhere (then again, most folks were all bundled up with hoodies, ski masks, or scarves so you couldn't see much more than folks' eyes at that point). Since they were bringing out the color guard for the national anthem at that point, we decided to take off for our seats so we wouldn't miss kickoff. Got up there just in time.

What a freakin' game, though. Our section was as loud as I have heard it in the 4th quarter. The ground beneath my feet in the whole upper deck in the north end zone was bouncing up and down. That rarely happens in a regular season game (although it is commonplace in the playoffs). I think I used up every last ounce of voice that I had, but when Deshea picked off that pass, I was not cold in the least. I had such a sudden rush of warmth that my body felt as if I could have been lying on a beach in the Caribbean. Awesome finish. It rivals the playoff game at Heinz in which Fu scored to complete the comeback against the Browns, and might have equalled the snow game against the Bears in '05 in terms of a memorable Heinz experience. Hope you all had as great a time as I did even if we did not get the opportunity to meet up.

I was worried you were the one dumping water on his naked body that they were showing on TV. But I figured you didn't shave your head for the game...hope that guy made it out okay and didn't catch pneumonia. :tt2

That was pretty hard core, although it would have felt great after the Townsend INT return for a TD!

It was a great day to be in Pittsburgh. I felt sorry for the folks who were going to be in the North end zone because that had to be a special brand of OMG Cold! It couldn't have been easy for SN1's crew, either, seeing that they were staring that wind right in the face.

We (the Ol' Lady and me) missed meeting up with everyone as well because of a late start getting out of Cleveland. We nevertheless tailgated anyway once we got there (a little before 2 p.m. once we parked and got sufficiently battened down against the elements) and had a good two hours worth of tailgating fun before settling in at Bubba's Ugly which is diagonally across from the left field stands at PNC Park on Gen. Robinson and Federal.

We did spot SN1's tailgate area. Even though he had already left, we figured we'd scout out the area. It was a really narrow lot, but with a fairly hearty crowd. SN1 hangs with a spartan crew of young Steelers faithful over there. The one guy I remember was the guy dressed in UVA Cavaliers gear. He was already most of the way there when we we're talking to him but he did say that Farrior was going to have a good game (which, by my account, he did). SN1's parking neighbor was a pretty cool group, too, and offered us a couple tasty "Tootsie Roll" shots to ward off the cold. They were a pretty nice group.

We walked toward the south end of the stadium and happened upon a lot with a live band. These guys pretty much just set up and jammed in the snow and I think they were part of a group which came down from NY but had people from everywhere partying with them. Their spread was catered, so this crew went all out to entertain prior to the game.

A little closer to the river, we encountered the "Beer We Go Steelers" fan club from Long Island. What a hearty group! Spent a little time talking with them and one of the girls in the group was nice enough to snap our picture (we'll have that on here later).

We proceeded to the other side of the stadium and, just for grins, decided to see how much the scalpers wanted for ducats. We weren't going to buy, since we were a bit cash poor, but we might have been able to score a pair for just a little over $150 just an hour prior to the game. Even so, I am understandably wary of street hustlers with ducats anymore since the ducats can be duplicated so easily. That said, we probably would have taken a pass, even if we had the money.

On our way to the bar, we stopped for one last adventure with a group that had a van regaled in tribute to the late Myron Cope. We talked with a nice couple from Danville, CA (Stanz, you weren't the only ones there from the Golden State). The guy was a Steelers fan and his girl was a Cowqueens fan. They were on their way in, but had to kill what was left of their stash. The dude killed two Miller Lite pounders and proceeded to crush both cans, chanting the mantra "Romo...Romo..." in the process of his destruction. His GF just chuckled it off. We wished her team luck since "they will obviously need it". Turns out I was right!!!

We watched the game at Bubba's Ugly with a group of very nice, and fairly intoxicated, frat boys from Slippery Rock. These guys were really cool though and helped lighten up an atmosphere that could have gotten quite surly. There were a few other local guys there as well and we compared notes on the team. We were all fairly confident that the Steelers have an increasing good chance to run down the SB in Tampa. The crowd wasn't real electric, but had a good vibe to it. Of course, the excitement meter just collapsed when Deshea ran back that Pick 6. We were all bear hugging and just going off like a normal Steelers fan would under the circumstances.

Afterward, we tried to get Costanza's group to get together with us over at Finnegan's Wake, just around the corner from Bubba's on Gen. Robinson. We talked once he got out from the game and gave details. In retrospect, though, my description of me and the Ol' Lady was less than sufficient and, in the end, we missed meeting.

Finnegan's is a nice spot, if not overly fabulous. We watched some post game highlights, then the first half of the Rattards/Deadskins game. Ordered some food to hold us on the way home, but that could have been a better idea. The prices were OK, but the portions were skimpy and the food was so-so at best. I could have run down a gyro vendor more easily and been more sated. We both ended up eating McDonald's on the way home.

We were going to go to the Pens/Sabres tonight, but our lodging arrangements fell through at the last minute and since we had yet to purchase ducats anyway, we agreed to set up a separate trip for a Pens game later in the season.

Overall, that was our second tailgate in Pittsburgh and this one was colder (by far) but a better day than the Clowns game from last year. The only downer, other than the food at Finnegan's, was that it was colder than hell. Even so, there was generous sunshine to help us along and make a cold December day a bit more palatable.

Well Ruthless and BH I'm sorry I missed you guys. I came around the plaza a few times and met SN1 a couple of times and drank a beer together. That was cool, him and his family seem like great people.

BH my phone died on the way to the bar and then we hit a detour and never made it back. Sucks but that's how it happens sometimes. Next time we'll hook up. Now on to my trip.

The trip/game just rocked. A total of 14 of us were there and just had a blast. My trend in meeting high profile players/people stands to 4 in a row now. Right when I get off the plane I meet Tunch Ilkin and talk to him for a bit while I'm waiting for luggage. He is a cool guy. Our rooms were at the Hilton and we got the exec floor (thanks to my job and being a Diamond member with Hilton--too much travel will get that for you). We met Heath Miller and Willie Colon the night before the game. Now the funny part, none of us have ever been in anything that cold EVER so we're loading up on the thermals. At some point my cousins decide to go MC Hammer in the room (Pumps in a Bump).

[youtube:1nvvx345]NdZVgKv_HzI[/youtube:1nvvx345]

We were rolling like crazy and couldn't control ourselves. So my cousin decides to go to the room next door in just his thermals on his legs and a old Steelers shirt to show them the dance. That was when we all met Tomlin, he was 4 rooms down. He just laughed and patted him on the back.

The trip just rocked! The game was the best I've ever been too, money well spent. Go Steelers!

Oops almost forgot, when I was checking out I talked to Deshea for 1/2 hour in the morning as he just finished talking to his charity corner. Man that guy looks very young. He looks like he's only 14 years old. He was very cool and let my kids get autographs and take pictures. Dream trip I tell you. I got the Post Gazette cover with him scoring the TD signed. Bam! One note I will never go to a game outside of September ever again too dang cold for me.

Okay...next time you come out, I'll make sure not only to meet up with you for a tailgate, but I am demanding to spend the whole weekend with your entire family if that means I get a chance to meet Tunch, Heath, Colon, Deshea, and Tomlin (no promises on doing any MC Hammer dances, though).

Stanz:

No sweat on missing the meeting. You didn't miss a lot. There was a good after game crowd and it dissipated in the hour or so we were there. By the time we left I was hitting the wall anyway and since the room arrangements fell through (we were supposed to stay with friends in Zelienople), we simply decided to drive home.

I deal with the cold OK and, FWIW, it's really not supposed to get that cold. But, I understand why you wouldn't plan on another December trip.

Even so, you had quite a few worthwhile memories on this trip. Thanks for sharing all of that with the group. And, most importantly, thanks for bringing home the win!!!

We had some garden variety pre-travel glitches before leaving here. I was disappointed that we didn't meet. But if that is where you always tailgate, then we'll be back since we know where you are at and you have some cool tailgating neighbors so it'll be well worth it. It's a matter of time, but we'll be partying with SN1 soon.

For us, we had a great day even with the relative cold. The sun helped...a lot! Next time, I'm bringing enough cash to cover a couple ducats if we're not already going and we can find someone who looks reasonable to by from.

One thing is for sure...if a Planet Steelers tailgate is going to happen next season, it will be wise to schedule it for a September or October game.

It may be a good time to bandy about some ideas and see who would want to participate.

No sweat Buck. That is where I tailgate for all Sunday games. On MOndays/Thursdays, we tailgate in the adjacent lot because that lot is filled with employees cars. We will definitely hook something up for next season
