about the punting situation?

As RB pointed out in the game chat, that is hurting us more than the offense even. We just can't get any kind of field position edge with that kind of performance by our punter.

I have a two prong strategy to alleviate the problem.

First, cut Ernster.
Second, sign anybody that can punt more than 40 yards.

shoot, more than 30 is an improvement. those 10 bungle points were a direct result of starting at mid-field. watch what the patsies do with that kind of field position......

Sounds like a plan.

We better sign someone else before the NE game....I can't take this guy anymore. Is Mitch Berger healthy yet? Heck I would take anyone over Ernster!

Has it been two or three weeks since Berger was launched? Either way, he should be mostly beyond the hamstring problem he has had. If they can't get anyone else, get him.

But I am all for an open tryout in the next two or three days. This @$$hole Colbert needs to get off his f---ing @$$ and earn his paycheck and find the best guy he can under the circumstances. In an ideal world, Sepulveda doesn't get hurt and there's no problem. But this isn't an ideal world. If Berger can't go, the Steelers need to have a cattle call to obtain their next punter.

:Agree

$$$$ Post BH.....this team is in too good of a position to allow the punting situation to cost them in the playoffs. Just get an average punter and it will be better than what we have.

In related Steeler news, James Harrison, always the team player, decided to give punting a try. However, after destroying 10 footballs on his first 10 attempts, he was asked to stop.

(Ya see what I did there is I tied this thread into the Harrison thread. I'm funny that way. Its how I roll )

Ernster did make a nice recovery and hold on a bad snap for an extra point. At least I'm assuming it was a bad snap since they didn't show a replay. Just something to consider along with his punting ability (or inability).

I think Mike Tomlin was pretty clear in the postgame presser. When asked about the punting game Thursday, he cut the reporter off with the words "It was horrible" with an awkward pause. When further asked he deadpanned "It'll be addressed". with another awkward 5 second pause, before moving on to the next question. If I were Ernster, I woulda saved a trip to the complex and cleared out my locker.

What sucks more for Ernster is knowing Sepulva (sp) will be back next year, he's basically auditioning for a punting job with another team. Hasn't helped his cause over the last two games.

I think we should all go suit up and try out. I'm sure I could do better than 30 yards once or twice. Of course I haven't had one measured since highschool which was oh...... never mind.

I'm with BH, bring them all in, maybe a Rugby player or two and let them kick in camp for the next ten days till the NE game. Hines can hold for Skippy.

where is lvg when you need him to point out that this is further evidence of Tomlin's gross incompetence.

Isn't it about time for another Sean Landeta comeback??

Before he gets sent on his way, a few props to Ernster -
First - That was a great save on the extra point snap, things like that go unnoticed.
Second - That was a good catch on that one punt snap. I know the punt only went for a 20 yard net, but he had to leap for the snap & had a guy on top of him when he kicked, so things could've been a lot worse.
Third - I think the windy conditions were a lot worse than we're giving it credit for. Both teams did not punt well.

In all the criticism of Ernster, the one thing that is getting overlooked is the long-snapping - it's inconsistent at best & possibly game altering at worst. Who would've thought that we'd miss Greg Warren so much?
That said, it is what it is & unfortunately for Ernster he has been somewhat a victim of circumstance, but he has not been good & it's going to cost him. But as we're learning with our specialists, there isn't some savior out there, if these guys were any good they'd have a job. Here's hoping Sep is doing well & will be back better than ever.
