The Steelers have released veteran running back Najeh Davenport and promoted rookie linebacker Donovan Woods to their 53-man roster.

Davenport played in four games this season and averaged 21.7 yards on 10 kickoff returns. He also gained five yards on two carries.

The Steelers had re-signed Davenport after injuries decimated the team's running back corps in late September. The Steelers could be thin at running back Sunday when they host the Colts.

If Willie Parker does not play because of a bad shoulder -- he is officially listed as doubtful for the 4:15 p.m. game -- the Steelers will have just two running backs on their 45-man game day roster, Mewelde Moore and Gary Russell. Fullback Carey Davis, though, can also play running back.

Woods has played in four games and been credited with five tackles on special teams.

We could always let Harrison run it. Couldn't be worse than long snapping, right?

Why cut just before a game ... anyone got a good reason not to wait for a full week?

I guess SAH is our return man now ... ?

Thank goodness!

Ditto, Shawn!!! And I hope they don't consider bringing him back again. I've never been impressed by the Chumptruck and my view on him isn't likely to change.

As I've said in the past about Chumpy, "A yard and a cloud of dust."

S'Tonio Holmes was used with a lot of effectiveness as a kick returner at tOSU. Why the Steelers wouldn't want to exploit that aspect of his game is a mystery to me.

Nice!!!

Anyway, I am not saddened by this news. I am, however, a bit confused.

I wonder if Denver will pick him up.

They need a warm body.

so they promoted a LB? Is this an indication they need depth because of woodley's injury? I doubt it but that was the first thing that came to my head.

Nah...Woods is a special teams guy more than he is a LB. And a good one at that.

Denver Donkos - a good cold place for steamers.

Like the move. Our ability to stop the big play on ST has been an improvement from last year. Plus, I want to see more of Gary Russell on the field. I think he's not gotten his fair shake and should be implemented this weekend. He runs with power and I like his footwork. Also.... Mewelde Moore is a Badazz and should see the field more.

If the article I read on the Colts is correct...they are extremely soft in the middle. A guy like Gary could have a big day against that D.

They are soft in the middle when Bob Sanders is hurt (which seems to be more than half the time lately) but he should be playing today. Still, I think we will be able to run on them much more than they will be able to run on us, for sure.
