Blackstock suspended for using performance-enhancing substance

CINCINNATI -- The NFL suspended Cincinnati Bengals reserve linebacker Darryl Blackstock for the next four games on Tuesday because he used a performance-enhancing substance.

The Bengals signed Blackstock as a free agent from the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason. He has played in all five games, including one start, and has four tackles. The fourth-year veteran said in a statement that one of his nutritional supplements contained an ingredient banned by the league.

"I've apologized to my coaches and teammates for an unfortunate mistake," Blackstock said. "I did not intentionally violate the policy, but I know it's my responsibility to use only approved nutritional supplements, and I didn't realize I was taking an over-the-counter product that included a banned substance."

The Bengals also re-signed running back Kenny Watson, who was released on Saturday when they needed to open a roster spot for receiver Chris Henry. The troubled receiver returned from a four-game suspension for misconduct and played in a 31-22 loss at Dallas, where he didn't have a pass thrown his way.

Watson carried seven times for 32 yards in the first four games, when he was Chris Perry's backup. His return gives the Bengals three tailbacks, including Cedric Benson, who was signed last week as a free agent.

Cincinnati also added rookie cornerback Simeon Castille to their practice squad on Tuesday. Castille, an undrafted free agent from Alabama, played in the first four games and was waived last Friday.

I'm almost starting to feel bad for the Bengals...

One thing I'm not worried about is players on the Bengals taking performance enhancing drugs. At 0-5, either the sheeet ain't working or they ain't doing enough for it to be harmful or useful...

Things with the Bengals have been quiet on the police blotter lately. Maybe this was their way of welcoming back Chris Henry?

Never. Until they blow up their current roster and completely change the culture in that organization they get what they deserve. They will only get better if they have some one come in and do what Parcells has done in Miami.

You can't argue with that logic. It starts at the top, and their top sucks. Sorry, Jom.... its not too late for you to change your stripes.

The fact that they resigned Chris Henry shows they won't change their stripes and they have no interest in becoming a better organization. To me that said it all about the Bumgals.

What's laughable is all the hype about how Carson Palmer is an upper echelon talent. The guy is all hype, no substance. He'll have a forgettable career, unless he migrates to another franchise.

Somebody should create an a page/article on Wikipedia specifically devoted to recording and describing the arrests/suspensions of the Bungles.

That would be funny.

I think Jom and most Bengal fans realize the problem starts at the top of the organization. Having an owner like Mike Brown would be the kiss of death to any franchise. It seems obvious he only cares about collecting the $$ and doesn't give a crap about the fans or the organizations reputation. I thought they might be heading in the right direction when they hired Marvin Lewis and Brown said he was going to stay out of the decision making. That didn't last very long. Lewis started losing control of the team at halftime of the playoff game with the Steelers. Although some bengal fans won't admit it I think it's apparent that CJ attacked a coach and the team has headed downhill since then. Lewis lost all control this fall when Brown completely ignored his wishes and resigned Chris Henry. How an owner can do that to a head coach is beyond me. Anyway, I wish the bengals would get there act together and provide us with some competition within the division. That will only make the Steelers stronger for the playoff run.

Jom, what's happening on the smack board. I'm sure it's pretty quiet over there. I imagine even Joe has had to stop his relentless attacks against Ben.

The top does suck, you won't find many if any Bengal fans that would disagree with you. As for me changing stripes, if it hasn't happened yet it's not going to.

I think you contradicted youself there. You say he's over-hyped but if he goes to another franchise he might not have a forgettable career. I think that just shows that he is a good QB but playing for a bad franchise. You're just hating AS.

Smack board has slowed down a lot. Majority of the posting now are just trolls (GW, BrutisBuckeye, Steelman, Sloppy, Domata, etc...). There are still a couple of good smack threads, JTS has been starting some lately but overall it's not the same. What can you expect when a team is 0-5 and several of the good posters have been banned...

Believe it or not, I actually dropped by the smack board and made a cameo appearance! Unfortunately, it didn't really garner the reaction I had hoped. :( Oh well.

By the way, whatever happened to firstand-"I'll pull this bandwagon myself!"-goal?

Ha, for a bit I thought he was posting under a new name "Powercore." I've recently changed my mind because that guy actually posts relevant information time to time.

Very much unlike FirstandFail.
