View Full Version : Steelers Eagles - Wearing Your Jersey?

One of my friends has Eagles season tickets, and is taking me to the game with him on Sunday. I'm pretty psyched -- it's been a long time since I've been to a regular season Steelers game.

The question is - do I wear my jersey? Ordinarily, I would wear it. But this is Philadelphia, and they're brutal here. I'm also not the biggest guy in the world. So, is anybody else going to the game this weekend? And, if so, are you wearing a jersey? I want to support the team, but I also want to enjoy the game, with minimal harassment. Thoughts?

Yo esquire... wear the jersey with pride dude. if it gets too bad in there, come on up to east falls and party at my house. We might just be frying an "eagle" in a big vat of peanut oil that day.

Ha Ha!!!.... I deep fry "eagles" every Thanksgiving, and a few other times throughout the year!

philly, I would also suggest wearing your jersey... You gotta fly the colors with pride... However, it IS Philly, so I would be careful. You might end up in that makeshift courtroom they set up downstairs!... ...I went to a Dallas/Philly game a while back. Right after TO left town (it could have been his first visit back), and it was rowdy... I wore neutral colors just to blend into the backdrop (acceptable since they weren't playing the Steelers).

my wife has sewn up the faces of some atlanta braves fans after a few rowdy phils fans took a bat to their dome... it's truly rough down there in south philly.

that being said, we were once the steagles, and this isn't the giants coming to town. I don't think the hatred for the stillers is as bad as some teams.

Fly the colors proudly and take a 2 day Karate class to help repel some of the yahoos.

You should wear your jersey, I've been to several Raiders games here and wear whatever the F I want there. Generally if you ignore jackasses they get tired of making poking at you. You'll be fine.

Get really drunk so your numb in case they cause bodily harm to you! :P

Just kidding. Do what your heart tells you. I'd have the same reservations. Your spending good $$ and you want to enjoy yourself. Since it is a 4pm game, the locals will have an extra 3 hours of tailgating time so they may be extra drunk.

Enjoy yourself & give us a report when you return!

Its unanimous phillyesq! Wear your jersey man!

I went to a Stains game in Cleveland and wore my stuff in the upper deck with all the drunk goofballs. I ignored them for the most part, until Ben led us down the game winning drive. When they scored I turned around and gave a big crotch crossing "suck it" to everyone. And proceeded to have hot dogs and beer thrown at me. It was AWESOME!

Thanks for all the responses.

The overwhelming consensus is to wear the jersey. So I think I'll have to rock the jersey. Since my friend is driving, I'll wait until I walk in to put the jersey on -- just so his car doesn't get destroyed.

I was thinking of wearing a plain black t-shirt, with a terrible towel tucked in, and pulling out the towel at the appropriate times. But, I'm convinced. I'm wearing the jersey!!!

And as long as we smoke the eagles, I don't care. Go Steelers!!!

Yep, definitely go for the jersey. Like I do around here when I wear my Black and Gold or Maize and Blue, it's fun to agitate the locals :D

I have to share another story about wearing a jersey in enemy territory. Used to know two transplants that were Chiefs season ticket holders and went to the Chiefs/Clowns game in Cleveland a few years ago. If you remember the game, it was week 1 and the Stains had seemingly stopped KC after John Tait rumbled down the field for about 20 yards with no time left. One of the Stains players, in true Browns fashion, took off his helmet and threw it up in the air at the end of the play. You guys, of course, know what that meant. 15 yard misconduct penalty and one more play for the offense because the game can't end on a defensive penalty. KC kicks a field goal with no time left to win the game, and these guys had to literally be escorted out by security so they wouldn't get killed. Ahh, Cleveland. Gotta love 'em! :brownssuck

I gotta agree, where it. I wore my Barry Foster jersey into the old Cleveland stadium in '94 without hesitation. I kinda figured there'd be nothing better to die in that day than my Steelers jersey. And hey, the Stains fans didn't have the balls to lay a hand on me...I was Okey-fine, especially since we won! LOL

Hell, this guy wore his Dale Earnhardt shirt right into the Rusty Wallace section in Bristol...... just sayin

Being a big guy can also have its drawbacks. Especially when the drunks get their beer muscles going and want to test you. Bad move.

SMG makes a good point though. If you're with your wife/girlfriend and/or kids, then you have to think about their safety. I brought my wife (my gf at the time) to a Steelers/Jets game here and it wasn't bad - we were both in B&G - I wore my 58, she was in 95. We were left alone but we saw some pretty bad fights and harassment. Last years Jets game was tame compared to that, but probably because THE NATION took over the stadium. I guess you can hope for the same to happen in Philly today.

Not saying that being big doesn't help, but the best thing you can do is NOT BACK DOWN from punks who are looking to start something. Remember when your dad told you to stand up to bullies in school, same rules apply here. Nine times out of ten, they'll back down (just ask the Cinci bun thrower  ). And that remaining one time when they don't, hey whatever. Getting a beating doesn't feel nearly as bad as backing down from a guy.

SMG and Armpit -- good advice. If I was bringing my girlfriend with me, I would go without the jersey.

It's not so much that I'm afraid to take a beating -- I just want to enjoy the game as much as possible, and also support the team at the same time. In any other stadium, except maybe Oakland, I wouldn't hesitate. But Philly is pretty nuts to begin with, and with the 4 o'clock game, all parties will have that extra 3 hours of drinking.

I'm certainly hoping that the Steelers Nation takes over the stadium. There are a ton of Steelers fans over here, so I think it is just a matter of whether they can get tickets.

2006 Jags game here in Florida, I flew the colors and was with an even smaller buddy of mine who happened to be a Jags fan. I can't tell you how many fans tried to start a fight with me... "Hey, let's kick Hines Ward's AZZZZ." We lost and I didn't have a good time. But, I rocked the jersey and wore it with pride and gave some lip back regarding our 5 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS...... Our history should give you the courage to face the day. Just remember... when you wear the colors, its like Jack Lambert is sitting right next to you.

So, I wore the jersey.

The harassment was minimal. Much better than I expected. Ton of Steelers fans at the game. I had a great time, and would have regretted not wearing the jersey.

As for the game itself, the Eagles at least 8 guys in the box all game. Very dissapointed that the O couldn't make them pay.

As I sober up, more coherent analysis will follow.

Sure Lambeau probably isn't on par with Philly or Oakland, but I've seen it get pretty ugly there. Usually it doesn't escalate beyond yelling and screaming, but I've seen it go beyond that.

1. There were a ton of Steelers fans there. The Eagles fans weren't nearly as bad as I expected. I put up with a few snide comments, and some were obnoxious, but for the most part, it wasn't nearly as bad I expected. Very glad I wore the jersey. Would have regretted not doing so.

2. The defense played great. No complaints there. I really thought that DeSean Jackson would prove to be a bigger problem. I thought Westbrook would play a bigger role, but he obviously wasn't a factor due to the injury. Thankfully, it's not a serious injury.

3. The offensive performance was even worse than it looked. Our seats were up high -- section 221, which is about the 10 yard line, top level, south endzone. We were up way, way behind the Steelers sideline. With the high perspective, it was easy to say that the Eagles really jammed the box. Almost every play, they had 8 guys in the box, with the corners playing tight on the WRs. The WRs could not beat the jam at the line, and we all know how well the o-line held up.

I thought the Steelers offense really failed to be creative. The WRs weren't getting separation. So why not run something out of the bunch formation. Quick WR screens, something like that. Heath was effective when utilized late in the passing game, but it was all but over then. I remember all the hype that Arians would utilize 3 TEs to create mismatches. That would have been great to see. I also think they abandoned the run too easily. This is just my impression, but FWP seems to be more effective with more carries.

4. Bringing Heath Miller into the backfield in the shotgun as a blocker was a disaster. From up above, I had no doubt that it would turn out as poorly as it did.

5. The Steelers WRs really need to step up their game. Part of this is the play calling as well, but the WRs need to release better and get separation. Especially with the Eagles only playing one deep safety most of the game, I thought the opportunity to make something happen deep was there. Assuming even minimal blocking and some separation. Holmes also had a couple of big, disappointing drops.

6. What happened to Mewelde Moore? He was a good punt returner in Minnesota, and he was also a threat out of the backfield catching the ball. Why hasn't he been utilized. I'd like to see him get a chance to run that third down screen that always went to Haynes and Davenport.

It was great to see the Steelers live -- it's been years. I want to say a game against Carolina in Three Rivers was the last regular season game that I saw (I catch the preseason games in Philly), so it was nice to finally see them live again. Even if it was one of the worst games I've ever seen them play.

Hey phillyesq - glad to see/hear you got back safe and sound, I was wondering about you.

Great insight, thanks for your observations. As you may have noticed, we on the board have gone hyperactive in terms of our analysis of what happened and why, it's great to hear the perspective of someone who was actually there.

Intriguing comments about the WRs ... really hadn't heard that angle much. Makes sense though, if they are stacking the box, there's got to be a mismatch somewhere. Yes, it sounds like the WRs do need to step up, get that separation.

I don't know if the "standard" TV shots will allow it, but I will try and focus on them on Monday night.

Thanks again!
