The Latest Buzz

http://www.theinsideronpittsburghsports.com/

Donovan Woods is the only surprise player to make the team but the injury to Arnold Harrison opened up a roster spot for a player like Woods. He did perform well on special teams. Roy Lewis and Travis Williams are strong candidates to be put on the practice squad. The Steelers like what they saw from both players. The Steelers gave a lot of consideration to keeping Lewis over Anthony Madison. Dallas Baker making the team over Willie Reid shouldn't come as a surprise. The Steelers have valued Baker over Reid since the early goings of training camp.

The Steelers have explored the trade market for Sean Mahan and Max Starks to clear some cap space. A source indicates the Steelers approached the Chicago Bears about Starks and indications are the Bears want nothing to do with Starks' salary. Sean Mahan could become an issue. There is some speculation coming from outsiders that Mahan is very unhappy and has privately demanded a trade. A Steelers source would not confirm this. If the Steelers are able to move Mahan it is a win-win situation for both sides. The Steelers will be able to clear some cap space and address other needs.

I'm hearing the Steelers would like to add a veteran #4 cornerback, if they are able to free some cap space.

The Browns have inquired about Ricky Manning jr and reports indicate there's a possibility they could sign Ty Law.

4:07 p.m. DE Wallace Gilberry of the New York Giants was released today. Gilberry listed at 6ft3 267 lbs was a pass rushing specialist in college and recorded 10 sacks and 27 tackles for loss in 2007 for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

4:00 p.m. The Cincinnati Bengals have cut tackle Willie Anderson, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer

Pete Prisco, CBSSports.com, believes in the Steelers. He states the quarterback position is the main reason Pittsburgh will hold off Cleveland for the division title.

Ex-Steeler and current Carolina Panther, Ricardo Colclough was arrested on Saturday and charged with driving while impaired. No word on whether catching punts was part of the field sobriety test.

3:30 p.m. The agent for Rudi Johnson confirms that his client has been released by the Bengals, according to NFL .com

2:52 p.m. A Steelers source would not not confirm nor deny speculation that Sean Mahan has demanded a trade. The Lions and Rams are exploring the waiver wire for guards.

2:30 p.m. The Steelers have approached the Chicago Bears to gauge trade interest in Max Starks. The Bears have been in the market for a tackle and have been linked to Fred Miller and Wayne Gandy. The salary of Starks remains an issue. In the past 24 hours there has been some speculation that Starks has been telling close associates that he thinks there's a strong chance he won't be a Steeler this season. Well see where this goes.

2:28 p.m. If the right player becomes available the Steelers may go the cornerback route. The first case of business is moving some salary on the offensive line.

2:12 p.m. Travis Thomas from Washington PA, was released by the Browns today. Thomas made a strong case to make the team after gaining 70 yards on 11 carries Thursday night.

1:50 p.m. There are some teams in the market for a tackle. John Clayton reports a few teams are giving Wayne Gandy a strong look. The Vikings could be one of those teams. Clayton expects Gandy to sign soon.

1:40 p.m. The Browns have made a slew of cuts headlined by third year receiver Travis Wilson. Wilson a former third round pick is a talented receiver but hasn't been able to put it all together. He is expected to be picked up very soon. The Cowboys, Titans, Jaguars, Bengals and Raiders are all in the market for a receiver.

1:35 p.m. As expected the Steelers are keeping an very close on the waiver wire. The Chiefs have released 17 including defensive ends Jason Parker and Johnny Dingle.

...Maybe we could get a box of BonBonns and a bag of cheese doodles for him......

Seriously though, if we can get something... ANYTHING... It might be worth exploring. But if they are also shopping Starks, we can't unload everyone.

Mahan is awful. Starks is better & good for mainly depth purposes. I couldn't care less if Mahan was cut. I find it comical that he demanded to be traded. He should be thanking the FO that he wasn't cut. Although I didn't think he was in danger of not making the final roster, I wouldn't of been shocked if he was cut.

IMO, there are players who can demand a trade & players who should just happy to be working. Mahan is clearly the latter.

I'm no capologist, but if we cut Mahan, then we're on the line for all of his signing bonus against next year's cap. If we trade him, then I'm pretty sure any new team assumes his contract and we're off the hook for his bonus. I could be wrong, but if that's the case I'm not so sure we cut him but rather trade him for a ham sandwich or something.

As I stated in another post, the guy is starter-capable (as a guard) and any team with a glaring hole there would probably deal. Detroit sounds like a great fit with their need plus Rod Marinelli being a long-time Bucs coach while Mahan did well there.

No one is going to trade for Max Starks with that one-year salary and risk him becoming a free agent in March. Besides, we gave him the cash as an insurance policy and would be foolish to try and dump him when no other tackle has proven they can handle the spot if Marvel goes down or Colon continues to suck monkey balls.

Essex has no trade value and further more, he's not proven to anyone (including us) that he can even handle starting in this league.

If a trade happens, the only logical candidate is Mahan. We have depth at guard and are thin at tackle. If he is also bitching over losing his gig, then he's nothing more than an over-paid cancer waiting to infect the team.

Time for Mahan-ectomy.

True, it would be dumb for another team to want to trade for Starks. Maybe the Steelers should contact Al Davis. He is dumb enough to pull off a trade for Starks.

Sometimes I wonder how a good FO would wind up with so much trash - Mahan, Starks, Essex, you name it ...

But then I look at the rest of the team, friggin' excellent and deep IMO, and I realize that you can't have everything.

All we need is average, even mediocre, protection for Big Ben, and we're going deep into the playoffs given the talent and depth we have at the other positions.

A strategy that may or may not pay off ... but IMO, a very valid and reasonable one for the FO to pursue, and HOLY CRAP I CAN"T WAIT TILL THE FIRST GAME NEXT WEEK!!!

We are going to have to give up at least a 6th and 7th round pick in any kind of Mahan trade.

The Steelers should simply agree to pay (Not A) Mahan's salary for this year as part of any deal for him. It's a tidy sum of $$$, but how much will it cost if he's around doing this: :stirpot

That's what they could offer to get rid of him because, in a trade, the Steelers would still need to get something in return. I'd think if you offer (Not A) Mahan and to pick up his 2008 salary, you could get a surprisingly reasonable deal for him from a team that has legitimate need.
