#4 - Steelers Special Teams

After the 2007 season, Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert told me that this was the No. 1 area that needed fixing. Pittsburgh was horrible on every level. If you are a Steelers fan, you can conjure up fresh nightmares from last year, starting with Joshua Cribbs dancing down the field. The coverage units must improve. The Steelers were dealt a blow when punter Dan Sepulveda was lost for the season. He had a great rookie season in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are hopeful Mewelde Moore can improve the return game.

With Mewelde Moore, Keyaron Fox, and Lawrence Timmons running down kicks we should be much improved in that area. I'd even have to consider keeping Anthony Madison. He has been great covering kicks this preseason. Now, returning kicks that's a whole different issue. That's a shame too. Think about this. We drafted Santonio Holmes and Willie Reid in the same draft and haven't gotten the return game from those guys we all expected. Maybe 08 is the year for one or both.

It is depressing, isn't it? We fight to get back into a game, Reed kicks a perfect ball
that should have had the stains pinned back, but our special teams can't handle the
pressure of tackling someone.

Other than the TD return against Buffalo, the ST has looked very good this pre season. It is now at a point where we don't have to hold our breaths from the time the ball is in the air until the tackle is (hopefully) made.
