From Coach Tomlin's PC yesterday:

"Bruce Arians has said he’s a three-tight end guy. Is that still the case?

We’ve got some schematic flexibility to fit what we believe our strengths are. Ideally, you’d like to have a third tight end. We’ve got some candidates and we’ll be watching those guys closely. But that’s a position that’s still in development.

Might Max (Starks) play some tight end?

Yes, and of course he did that for us some last year. "

Would seem to make sense since the 3rd TE seems to be the blocking TE. Having Starks back up at both Tackle positions plus TE is definitely positional flexibility.

Also saves a roster spot which is always good. I hope we sign Boyd back as he gets healthy.

For $7 mil, he should be able to play LT, RT, TE, waterboy, groundskeeper, bus driver, assistant to the equipment manager, etc.

$7 Mil to play 3rd string TE, I'm definitely in the wrong profession...

Spaeth, Miller, Vickers, and a rookie.

Didn't we have 3 top notch tight ends last year (i.e., another big name besides Spaeth and Miller)? I remember being all excited about the 3 TE set with 3 beasts.

Maybe just the fog of the offseason playing havoc with the memory :wft

Don't remember you guys having a good 3rd TE last season. Maybe you're thinking about a RB lining up as a TE or something in the 3 TE sets?

We had Tuman I think as #3. They brought back Cody Boyd and he looked close to locking down the #3 spot until he hurt his shoulder. They Waived him in the "waived/ injured" status. Tomlin mentioned in his PC about resigning him to the PS. Apparently Tomlin said his surgery was not as bad as expected so maybe we see him back by mid season.

I still want my "redwood red zone offense" with Miller (6'5"), Spaeth (6'7"), Boyd (6'8") and Sweed (6'4").

Yeah, Tuman started out on our active roster, but when he was injured, Starks filled in as the de facto 3rd TE in short yardage/goal line situations. Looks like it may be a whole lot of the same this season.

Yeah, Max did this on 04 too when he was a rookie. Heck we might as well get something out of him. Have we ever checked his hands, maybe Ben can throw him a couple of TD's this year, at least then he will be worth a couple million. Well maybe not!

What a terrible waste of $!

Max should play the backup anywhere we can get some of that $7M guaranteed out of him. Perhaps he can cook too? As big as he is.......... :HeadBanger

Starks as the third TE to start the season makes a lot of sense, especially if the team keeps four QBs to start the year. The spot for the 4th qb will have to come from somewhere, and the third te, given the injury to Boyd, seems like a likely spot.

Shoot...I'd throw him out there on the defensive line too...anything to earn that money!

Interesting thought...keeping only 2 TE's with Max as the 3rd in order to keep 4 QB's during the early part of the season while Batch's shoulder heals. If Batch and Boyd are expected to be able to play at around roughly the same time, they could keep Batch on the active roster as a 4th QB until he heals fully, and keep Boyd on the practice squad until he heals fully. When the time comes, they could decide whether they should dump Leftwich when Batch is healthy enough to return (or else cut Batch if they realize that Byron is the better option for this season). When the roster gets trimmed to 3 QB's a month or so into the season, then you can move Boyd up from the PS to be the 3rd TE, allowing Max to focus on his backup tackle duties for the rest of the year. I don't think that I would necessarily choose to do things this way, but I suppose it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Batch can be placed on the PUP list for the first six weeks of the season where he will not take up a roster spot...

After those six weeks, the Steelers can:

1) Activate him
2) Release him
3) Place him on injured reserve

Batch is in the last year of his contract. Putting him PUP is the best move from a team perspective. It makes no sense to have 4 QBs on the roster when 3 are likely not to play on game day. That is a waste.

As far as Starks, he does offer great positional flexibility and I think before the season is over we will be glad he is on the roster because of either injuries or Colon continulally getting eaten alive by edge pass rushers. Heck I'd like to see Davis off the roster and Max can be our lead blocker, particularly in the red zone. Worked for the Bears and the "Fridge."

I just think that, given their various contract situations, the Steelers are better off finding a way to keep 10 offensive linemen on the roster...if that means counting Starks as a 3rd TE, then so be it...the #3 TE isn't a factor on offense at all, unless of some kind of injury...if that's the case, sign one of the TEs in camp to the practice squad...

Right now, Marvel Smith, Chris Kemoeatu, Trai Essex and Max Starks are in the last year of their respective contracts...Willie Colon will be a RFA...Hartwig is signed only through 2009...

I really think that the Steelers are better off keeping offensive linemen that they like (Darnell Stapleton, for example) or first year players with potential (Tony Hills) to allow them to develop as players and master the offense rather than try to spend high draft picks or loads of free agency money rebuilding...

But, that's just me...

I would keep:

Smith
Kemoeatu
Hartwig
Simmons
Colon
Essex (backup OT)
Hills (inactive on game day)
Mahan (backup OG/C - can't be cut at this point without some salary cap inconvenience)
Stapleton (possibly inactive on game day)
Starks (listed as 3rd TE)

Somebody earlier suggested putting Batch on the PUP list. But is he eligible? I though that players who practiced at any time during camp or the preseason were not eligibile for the PUP list, but I might be wrong on that.

On second thought, I think you're right...

Batch may not be eligible for the PUP list because he started training camp on the active roster and was injured during a preseason game...
