dallas baker certainly gave himself a boost over reid to make the team.

also, from what i was able to see- hartwig didn't do himself any favors in his efforts to over take mahan. i saw him wiff when pulling on an off LT run- didn't get any drive on a couple other interior runs.

anyone else have any input on hartwig??

somewhat surprised timmons was in the game till the end. I think that indicates they are trying to get him reps- to prepair him for starting. (hoping that is the case)

anthony smith playing strong safety... anyone have any comments?? I saw him lined up as SS, but couldn't really make any assessment-

Dixon looked much better- despite the line just letting the bills get pressure on him while rushing only 4.

couldn't really tell anything about Parker or Mendenhall- starting line looked like junk.

There were some positives and negatives. That is to be expected. The thing about the negatives is they are things that can be worked on.

I know I said I was going to bed, BUT I just watched the Big Ben highlights on NFL.com, and honestly, our pass protection didn't look too bad at all, at least from what I saw. Kemo and Hartwig both looked like they could hold their own. *knocks on wood*

Obviously we had trouble opening running lanes this game, but FWP and Mendy looked great last week. I think once we decide who our center is, we'll be able to get these problems ironed out.

Our first team was beaten 14-0. Not good my friends.

Ben didn't have time until the Bills braught in their second unit, Marvel got manhandled by Schoeble, Colon also looked pretty bad. Ben looked good, checked down and threw one away, just wasn't given much protection. Our first team couldn't even run the ball against their second team. Also Woodley looked very human getting blocked easily by a running back at one point.

Just a bad night for the black and gold IMO.

It wasn't a stellar night for the Steelers, but there were positives!

I think that Dallas Baker took a major step towards securing the 5th WR spot. He showed good hands and some guts going over the middle for several of those passes.

I think Dennis Dixon showed he belongs on the 53 man roster. There is no reason for him to be put on the waiver wire, he is a player!

I thought the pass protection was okay with the first team, not great but okay! I think that we need to decide who the center is going to be and set it and get ready for Minnesota.

Santonio and Hines are going to give teams fits all year. These guys are good.

The defense was a real disapointment tonight. There was very little pressure and the tackling was terrible. I know that I have said it before but can we please cut Tyrone Cater? This guy is awful!

I thought Berger kicked well tonight! The one thing I noticed was that he was the holder on Jeff's attempts, that may be the one thing that makes a difference in that competition.

Overall the night was not good. There is alot of work to be done. Next week will be a good test for the 1st unit D. AP will run all over this team if they play the way they did this week.

Time to go back to work Gentlemen, only three weeks left till they start to count!

I'm watching the replay currently. I was watching it online live via JustinTV.

Anyway did anyone see how much air Mendenhall was sucking after that first TD. I def don't think it was/is a big deal but he was huffing and puffing and getting knocked around in celebration by starks and co. He had to be thinking "just leave me alone for 30 seconds" lol.

Thought the first string Def. sucked bigger wind than my last beer fart.
Also, Moore looked complacent, can't say he beat Reid. (This guy is still trying to stutter along.)
Fella's, THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR TO PROVE, AND MAKE YOUR SPOT?
Did not see that much tonight, Ms. Big Fan said "Maybe it's a ploy!"
I sure hope she's right, they ran through us like butter.

James Harrison looked good!!

That was a nasty sack that Timmons had against the 3rd string QB. I hope to see him do that against people who wont be selling insurance next month.

The secondary didn't do anything that stood out good or bad. I may of missed something though.

Another thing that I'm pleased with is the direction that the relationship between Big Ben and Holmes seems to be headed. Holmes could very well have 15 TD's this year!!!

I remember alot of people on the Trib. wanting to cut him the summer after he was drafted because of the off the field incident with his baby's mama.

I recall one poster saying that he would confront any fan that he see's wearing a Holmes Jersey.

It’s just the second pre season game – so if they come out and look great against the Vikings next game all will be forgotten – but they (O, D, and ST’s) did not look good or particularly focused last night.

Outside of the Harrison sack there was no pressure from first team D – understanding they are running mostly vanilla still. The coverage was not good at all. They were gashing the line for run yards and that 3rd and 12 from the 7 was a killer and ended up being a 90 yard drive. Ouch.

Everyone (myself included) thought there was no way the Steelers couldn’t improve at center. Maybe I’m missing it (please chime in) but has Hartwig done anything to truly distinguish himself as the ‘man’? Ben looks good and continues to be the hardest QB to tackle in the league. On one of his scrambles (I think it was second series) where he threw it away – how in the world did a WR not come open with that kind of time? I think we see a TON of Ben to Holmes this year.

Easy missed 43 yard FG (inside a dome) and TD return were bad for ST’s.

Hopefully it was just a bad game that happens in the preseason and they’ll get after this week in practice and next week!

Our pass D was soft and no pressure. These I am not worried about yet due to 2 starters (Troy, Deshea) out and vanilla schemes.

Our run D was soft and I AM worried about this. Hopefully it was just Casey's first game or something.

Dixon looked good. THat run was amazing. It looks like he drops back with really short, fast steps. But he has an arm baby.

All in all, it was not a good game, but it was only one game.

And, despite everything we could have still won if we had made a FG and hadn't given up a ST score <sigh>

After watching the game again last night.

1.The OL didn't play as bad as I first thought. The tackles played the worst imo. I rewound several times and never saw the hold by Hartwig. I had no problem with the hold on Colon on the int. as when he got beat he tackled the guy and kept him off Ben.

2.Casey didn't play that well against the run, but he did push the pocket back on passing downs. Some of the runs though went at Smith and surprisingly to me he didn't play that well.

3.As a Foote defender and a strong Tomlin supporter, I'm going to be really upset with Tomlin if Timmons doesn't start. Even when he makes a mistake and is out of position his speed makes up for it.

4.On the KR for a TD, there was a blatant block in the back right in front of the ball carrier, I don't know an official could have missed it. Not excusing the rest of the players on the field, but without the block in the back the TD would not have happened.

5.I looked at the hold several times on the missed FG as it was Berger doing the holding. It looked like a good hold to me.

6. I was more impressed with Berger on punts as his hang time seems better than Ernster. Wasn't happy with the one he punted into the end zone, but he wasn't happy about it either.

7. Dixon seems to me that he is progressing. Leftwich, I'll cut some slack as he'd only been there 3 days, but the receivers sure do drop a lot of his passes.

8. The thing that concerns me the most was the poor tackling. I think some of the guys that will be cut need to become tackling dummies before camp breaks. lol

9. All in all it's really hard to judge anything by a pre-season game.
