View Full Version : Kickin' Renegade to the curb

So lets say the Steelers do the right thing and get rid of that outdated song that, honestly, is just a bad song. Really, it's a bad song. I hated it when it was new and I hate it now. Always have and always will.

Anyway, sorry about that rambling, but did I mention that I really hate that song?

Ok, so they're going to kick it to the curb...be done with it...and it's your job to replace it. Bear in mind all the circumstances involved...it's an athletic event and your job is to pick something that pumps up the crowd but at the same time can be considered family friendly since people of all ages will be in attendance, as well as people who are deep in their faith and would find the Steelers using a song containing profanity as offensive. Heck, some people who aren't religious might not like that. You get the point...the song has to do what it's intended to do and not offend. So what do you choose?

I believe my choice would be right for many, many reasons. The lyrics are appropriate for athletic competition yet they shouldn't offend and the music certainly should get the energy flowing...especially the transition that takes place at the 57 second mark. The beginning starts off uptempo with the drums, then the guitar comes in, then it goes into a slow building, almost anthemic battle mode, picks up tempo again, then comes that sweet ass transition (that gives me goosebumps because it's soooo effing good) and then it goes into the song. Outstanding!!!

I give you Rush - One Little Victory

[youtube:297td9xd]-c8AP9xZPaQ&hl[/youtube:297td9xd]

A certain measure of innocence
Willing to appear naive
A certain degree of imagination
A measure of make-believe

A certain degree of surrender
To the forces of light and heat
A shot of satisfaction
In a willingness to risk defeat

Celebrate the moment
As it turns into one more
Another chance at victory
Another chance to score

The measure of the moment
In a difference of degree
Just one little victory
A spirit breaking free
One little victory
The greatest act can be
One little victory

A certain measure of righteousness
A certain amount of force
A certain degree of determination
Daring on a different course

A certain amount of resistance
To the forces of the light and love
A certain measure of tolerance
A willingness to rise above

I heard Renegade today on the radio. I thought about the Steelers, and then changed the dial. I don't hate the song, but it is a bit dated and old. No replacement songs come to mind.

Metallica is a great band. So great and so popular that people call them overated or terrible because they think it makes them sound like some aficionado who's taste in music is on a higher scale than the rest of us. Its cool. You can like what you like, but you can't deny that Metallica has produced some great music and has been able to sustain their popularity for a long time.

And no, I'm not a big fan of Renegade. But I do like Styx

I actually bought Dennis Deyoungs solo album, Desert Moon ,when it came out

"Click, Click, Boom" by Saliva would be good but they have already whored the song around to so many things (Play Station, WWE, the Super Bowl, ect) that it would be cliche to use.

Music is all about personal tastes my friend. I don't like Metalica. Never have and never will. I don't think their songs are that good, I don't think the writing is that good (lyrics) and I don't think the musicianship is that good. Popularity doesn't mean squat...Britney Spears has sold a ton of records too. So have a lot of other sub-par artists. The Bee Gees...ABBA...the list goes on.

As for Styx, they've had a few songs that I liked, but overall I think they sold a lot of records because they had some big hits with some schlocky songs. Loreli...Mr. Roboto...come on! :P

Just to prove to you that I'm not BSing, here's a Styx song that I like. Snowblind from the Paradise Theater album. Ignore the cheesy video the person posting to youtube used. Just listen to the song.

[youtube:vljgrcxw]/v/QdMEQ2fU7HA&hl[/youtube:vljgrcxw]

I wasn't trying to turn this into a "my taste in music is better than yours" thread. I simply stated that I believe Metalica to be over rated as a band. That's all. If you like them that's fine with me...it's all good my friend. :)

As far as buying DeYoung's solo album...hey, we all screw up every now and then. I bought Eddy Grant's "Killer On The Rampage" because of "Electric Avenue".  It didn't take me long to realize the mistake I'd made, but still    .

:? not a Styx fan per se, but i dig Renegade. The way the song opens in
a capella gives me chills...when that song is on the radio i crank that ****e
and imagine our D layin' cats out.

IF we HAD to change the song i would recommend Pantera's 'Respect Walk' (I know you are not a fan of this song D) or Saul Williams - 'List of Demands'.

ghetto, I'm a huge PanterA fan, and walk is a great song. but it's a song that would never be used :(
bullet for my valentines - 4 words to choke upon would also be a good song.
Bulldozer from machine head
the blood, the sweat, the tears- also from machine head
but those songs are too agressive and the hippies wouldn't like it.

What's wrong with the Bee Gees???? :x

Like you said, music is all about personal taste. People will over rate the music they like and under rate the music they don't. I just think that when a band is able to sustain the kind of popularity that Metallica has, for such a long time - then there's gotta to be something behind it.

i hate styk and rennegade, but when ever i hear that song i get pumped up and think about the steelers. i guess i dont hate the song since i have such a good association with it. i love old metallica but there are so many better songs than enter sandman. i love hip hop rap and a wide variety of rock, unfortunately there are few rap songs that can be played at any kind of sporting event because of language. that being said my choice would either be cowboys from hell by pantera or in your face by 311. i actually hate pantera and i think they are trash, but for some reason that song makes me wanna rip off someones head

I think Heinz Field is the only place in the world where Renegade rocks. There's
something about that song that gets the crowd pumped and I wouldn't change it.

But lets say Michael Jackson bought the rights to all Styx recordings and he wouldn't
let it play at Heinz without collecting a huge fee, and those cheap Rooney's, or whoever
owns the team in Bizzaro Land, wouldn't pay the fee, then I'd go with Filter - Hey Man
Nice Shot.

Jeez...I leave for a week, and you hosers wanna dump Renegade. Yikes. I'm with SN1 on this one. Sure, the song itself may be outdated and all, but it still gives you chills when they play it live at Heinz, and it pumps the crowd up every time. If you had to replace it with a more contemporary song, though, I like Jiga's suggestion for Hey Man, Nice Shot. Great song. It came on the ol' iPod today, and the song gave me a bit of a second wind in the middle of a 4 hour flight home.

One song that I thought that would make for a pretty good Jumbotron collage (but for more of a pre-game type of song to be played right before the players come out for introductions as opposed to the in-the-middle-of-the-game pump-up-the-crowd song stlrz d was looking for in this thread) would be "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance.

It would be a good beginning of the game "Welcome" to the crowd, followed by a "Black Parade" of Steelers coming out of the tunnel. During the beginning, slow part of the song with the "When I was a young boy, my father took me into the city" part it could show slow-motion black-and-white clips of a boy and his day both walking into a game in full Steeler gear, followed by highlights from past Steeler Super Bowl victories, with specific shots of Steelers pounding Vikings, Cowboys, Rams, and Seahawks players when the song says "Will you defeat them, your demons, and all the non-believers, the plans that they have made?" Then, when the song gets more up tempo, it could switch to full-speed color-mode featuring current players knocking the snot out of people. Lyrics like "Your memory will carry on," "So paint it black and take it back," and "You can try, you'll never break me" seem like perfect fits for this type of anthem. We could even have a little fun with the "Disappointed faces of your peers" part (there are plenty of clips of whiny, crying Browns, Ravens, and Bengals fans that you could have a field day there). :2c

:2c

I'm not a country music fan whatsoever, but I like me some Johnny Cash (his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" is nothing short of brilliant...although I also like the Kermit the Frog version of that song as well...the video of Kermit masturbating to the picture of Miss Piggy with the Jim Henson photo in the background during that song is one of the most overtly disturbing yet oddly hilarious things I have ever seen). Anyway...my original point before I went off on that bizarre tangent was that Social Distortion has a good modernized version of "Ring of Fire" out there.

Seriously, though, a good time was had by all. Dreams Punta Cana was a great family resort. The kids did not want to leave the Explorer's Club seemingly ever, leaving the wife and I plenty of time to ourselves. We basically ate breakfast with the kids, spent about an hour before dinner with them swimming and playing games with them, then tucking them in at night. They even preferred to eat their lunches and dinners with their friends at the buffet rather than with mom and dad at the fancier French, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Seafood, or Steakhouse Grill restaurants. I even met a Clevelander who was a nice enough guy, but I made sure to get his email so I could taunt him mercilessly after we wipe the floor with them in week 2. :brownssuck

Sorry to get back to this so late, but I wanted to chime in on Ruthless' comments...

Ruthless...you & I are on the same page with "Sabotage" & Cash's version of "Hurt", but I'd like to hear any one of those songs I listed played at the stadium to get it rocking. But I think that thousands of people singing the signature tune of "The Man in Black" would be fantastic.

But I still wanted to throw a couple more out & keeping with the "Renegades" theme, we could go with the "Renegades of Funk" by Rage Against the Machine. Shoot..."Sleep Now In the Fire", "Guerrilla Radio" or "Testify" would be GREAT songs to play to get both the team & the crowd fired up :Beer :tt2 :Beer :tt2 . The Patriots should change their song to "Spies Like Us". Remember, by Paul McCartney for the movie of the same name back in 85'.

:D

Music is all about personal tastes my friend. I don't like Metalica. Never have and never will. I don't think their songs are that good, I don't think the writing is that good (lyrics) and I don't think the musicianship is that good. Popularity doesn't mean squat...Britney Spears has sold a ton of records too. So have a lot of other sub-par artists. The Bee Gees...ABBA...the list goes on.

We're all entitled to our own opinions, even if they're wrong.

Anyway, this song always gets me pumped. You people will probably like it if you're into metal. If not, well I guess you can kiss my hairy arse.

Drowning Pool - Step Up

Broken,
Yeah, you've been living on the edge of a broken dream.
Nothing,
Yeah, that's the only thing you'll ever take away from me.

I'm never gonna stop,
I'm never gonna drop,
Ain't no different than it was before.

So take some good advice,
You better stop and think twice,
Before you take your first step,
Out that door.

If you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down (knocked down).
If you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down.

You had your chance to walk away.
Live to see another day.

If you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down (knocked down).
You're gonna get knocked down...

Aaaaah...

Suffering,
Yeah, that's the only thing here that's left for you.
Nothing,
Yeah, that's the only thing you're ever gonna ****in' do.

I'm never gonna stop,
I'm never gonna drop,
Ain't no different than it was before.

So take some good advice,
You better stop and think twice,
Before you take your first step,
Out that door.

So if you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down (knocked down).
If you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down.

You had your chance to walk away.
Live to see another day.

If you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down (knocked down).
You're gonna get knocked down...

You're gonna get knocked down...

And now you've crossed that line...
You must be out your mind.

Go.

If you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down (knocked down).
If you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down.

You had your chance to walk away.
Live to see another day.

If you wanna step up (step up),
You're gonna get knocked down (knocked down).
You're gonna get knocked down...

You're gonna get knocked down (step up).

You're gonna get knocked down...

You're gonna get knocked down (step up).

You're gonna get knocked... down!

Here's another good one, by Blitz. Might be a better soccer song, but oh well.

"Someone's Gonna Die"

[youtube:3agpgxs8]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DgMWyQtucyc&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DgMWyQtucyc&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/youtube:3agpgxs8]

This is where the good times went
With his brains lying on the pavement
With a broken bottle in his hand
And another in his back

Do you feel alright?
Oi! Oi! Oi!
Someone's gonna die tonight
Oi! Oi! Oi!
Do you feel alright?
Oi! Oi! Oi!
The boys are out tonight

Was it something that he said?
Or his football scarf now stained red
Or the broken bottle in his hand
You will never understand

Do you feel alright?
Oi! Oi! Oi!
Someone's gonna die tonight
Oi! Oi! Oi!
Do you feel alright?
Oi! Oi! Oi!
The boys are out tonight

black sabbath - iron man

That's what I'm talking about!!!

A vote against "Renegade". "Iron Man" would fit the profile more aptly.

I don't hate Styx. But I do prefer Dennis DeYoung on his own. Styx doesn't exist apart from Dennis DeYoung. The "Styx" that exists now isn't Styx.

However,"Renegade" is a dog as a fight song. "Iron Man" befits the Steelers hard core values and fan base. It's perfect.

The only problem I have with Iron Man is the same one I have with Hell's Bell's - they're too dang popular. Everyone uses them. Don't get me wrong, I love both songs to death, but after being used so much they just aren't as special if we use them. That's why I prefer going after lesser-known ones.

Iron Man would be perfect. But, if it's new stuff or lesser known tunes that should be considered exclusively, then I propose "Yell Fire" by Michael Franti and Spearhead http://www.spearheadvibrations.com/.

I couldn't get behind Hell's Bells, but Iron Man just sounds like the dirging, plodding, methodical anthem that would drive the Steelers and put the opposition in the dirt where they belong.
