Don't Stop Drinking or You'll Get Depressed: Study
In mice that drank alcohol for 28 days, depression-like behavior was evident 14 days after termination of alcohol drinking.
Thursday, July 10, 2008

(UPI) - Stopping drinking even at moderate levels has been linked to depression and a reduced capacity of the brain to produce new neurons, U.S. researchers said.

Researchers at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said that their research in an animal model establishes a causal link between abstinence from alcohol drinking and depression.

Senior author Clyde W. Hodge said that in mice that voluntarily drank alcohol for 28 days, depression-like behavior was evident 14 days after termination of alcohol drinking.

"This suggests that people who stop drinking may experience negative mood states days or weeks after the alcohol has cleared their systems," Hodge said in a statement.

The mice were tested for depression-like behavior using a widely recognized method called the Porsolt Swim Test. The mice are placed inside a beaker filled with water and allowed to swim for six minutes. Mice are good swimmers and have no problem completing this task, but the amount of time they spend immobile -- floating and not swimming -- is measured as an index of despair or depression-like behavior -- the more immobile, the more "depressed" the mouse is thought to be.

The findings are published online in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology.

Now, this is all well and good, but below is the BEST reason not to stop drinking... Who would want to give this up?!................

Nice pics. :tt2

And there is actually truth to that study. Alcohol supresses the brains natural ability to produce "happy hormones". It replaces natural endorphins with the alcohol. Therefore when you quit...initially you can suffer from being depressed and "flat".
