Alright, when did they start using the phrase "walk-off" for just about everything?...

It has irritated me since I noticed it last year in baseball... "He hit a "walk-off" home run...", "His 'walk-off' stats are great...", etc... Didn't it used to simply be called pinch-hitting?...

And now, earlier today, I heard some commentary regarding basketball, and they referenced "he hit a walk-off 3-pointer"...

...Talk about "irritating"!.... Does it bother anyone else?....

i always hated when they said "he's out with a toe" or "he's out with a knee"
how hard is it to say the word injury in that sentence?

They have called it a walk off home run for as long as I can remember....

The rest is weird though.

But the distance on you "walk off" was only 50 characters...how the hell is that a "walk off"? Maybe a "walk off" to the pitcher's mound.

Agreed. I only remember it being used for home runs and all of a sudden it's every where.

For me it's worse when they start every sentence with "I mean". :HeadBanger

This is all really striking a chord, but seriously,...

...It used to be called "pinch hitting", not "walk off"..... Right?!......

pinch hitting is when a player hits for another.
walk off is when a player comes to the plate and hits a homer on the first pitch.

walk off is when a player comes to the plate and hits a homer on the first pitch.

But they are now using the terms interchangably.... For example, this was a game over the weekend:

Encarnassion came into the game for the pitcher (as a pinch hitter). He worked the count to 2-2, then hit a double, scoring a run.... They were saying his "walk-off" average is now .325..... And the media uses this phrase liberally (at least around here).

In past years, they simply called it pinch hitting. Or at least I thought...

I HATE this term. Where did it come from & how in the world did it catch as a "cool thing to say"?

Walk Off average refers to a guy delivering a walk off hit when at bat (be it home run or whatever). In your example basically what they are saying is Encarnassion (sp?) has a .325 average in such situations. They call it a walk off because it happens in the bottom of the inning so the players "walk off" the field since the game is over after that one hit.

With all due respect birt, a walk off home run does not have to be hit on the first pitch to be considered a walk off. If it ends the game no matter what the count is it's a walk off.

But getting back to the point, they do use it too much because people used to only use it for home runs. So it's confusing when they give scores for all the MLB games and a guy says "walked off" in regards to SEVERAL games. I do a double take cuz I'm automatically thinking, "Holy ess there were a lot of game ending home runs last night!"

I hate that RBIs are not plural any longer all the obtuse talking heads started this BS a few years ago and now it's caught on. "He's having a great year with 36 homeruns and 134 RBI" WTf is that? No one calls it a Ribbie any longer and they wonder why attendance at baseball games is diminishing.

That's my rant for the day.

And, since, I ranted and you took the time to read it you get rewarded with this little montage of Holly Weber:
