ESPN Cans Pittsburgh Radio Host Mark Madden for Dumber-Than-Usual Comments

Earlier this year, I spent a few hundred words bellyaching about the sorry state of Pittsburgh sports radio. Specifically, the fact that village idiot/local ESPN radio "personality" Mark Madden earned a paycheck to spew invective while making everybody who listened to him dumber in the process.

For me, it was more a therapeutic rant than anything -- Madden generates ratings, and ratings, as we know, trump all. Or so the thinking went. Today, ESPN corporate made an exception:

"We've taken Mark off the air pursuant to our contractual rights," said Josh Krulewitz, the network's vice president for public relations. On his radio show Wednesday, Madden said the following about Sen. Kennedy, who days earlier had been diagnosed with brain cancer:

"I'm very disappointed to hear Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated."

Madden was last heard on his show Thursday, the day before his comments appeared in the Post-Gazette.

For Madden, it couldn't have happened to a nicer jerk.

Late last year, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Bob Smizik wrote that Madden was dangerously close to losing his job once the higher-ups in Bristol caught wind of his shtick. (Apparently, nobody at headquarters cares about the backwaters of Western Pennsylvania radio ... until it comes to their attention that some jackass is singlehandedly ruining the wholesome Disney image Bayless, Paige and Smith worked so hard to cultivate.)

Madden agreed to temper his assault on common sense when his job was threatened. That he managed to last another six months is an accomplishment worthy of recognition. So congrats, Madden, for keepin' it real. An entire city (and especially Hines Ward!) thanks you for going away.

Random YouTube Fun: I vote for Tank Abbott to replace Madden who, after watching this video, would do well to get Larry the Cable Guy on the horn.

What is it about morons in the media named Madden??

At first I thought this was a joke on some dude's blog because of the "city residents flock to the streets" comment with accompanying picture...so I did a google search and it's legit.

http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/new ... etail.html (http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/16408949/detail.html)

After seeing this guy in that bit about rivalries where he trashed the terrible towel and made fun of the term Steelers Nation I knew he was simply nothing more than a pot stirrer.

This is great news!! The only thing that would make this sweeter would be to have the Pens do a 180 & come back and win the Stanley Cup. I think the Pens was the only Pittsburgh team that Madden was a fan of. To have Madden have to sit thru the joy of the Pens winning the cup (within days of getting fired) would be karma working her it's best!!

After reading the article on the PG website, I have to admit I'm shoked at all the support MM got in the reader's comments section of the article. It's sad, really. Holy crap, people. He said a state Senator should have been assasinated rather than die of a brain tumor and an 8-year-old girl who tragically died at a hockey game "had it coming to her". There was more, but these stand out. He's a classless slob who should have been removed from the airwaves years ago.

Exactly.

He just went too far, especially for a Disney-owned company.

Fortunately I only had to listen to this moron when we did our annual pilgimage/family vist back to Pittsburgh every year. I would usually end up turning off the channels on the car radio much to the delite of my teenage daughters.

Madden could very easily be Nutsack, cowhersucks and many of the other more obnoxious posters on the Trib board who just throw out negative one liners with absolutely no substance just to get attention.

Him being gone is a good thing for talk radio in P-burgh.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

And that would certainly explain Nutsack's mentality........that of a 6 yr. old.

I will miss Madden and his insight. Let's take a moment of silence.

Thank you.

I honestly didn't mind listening to him. I never let his negativity get to me so he never got my blood boiling. There were some funny moments and he is rather knowledgable of Pens (and hockey in general) so that kept me listening. I would say that a line may have been crossed, but honestly what did ESPN (or the local station) expect? He is doing the job he is hired for. He got his 8.7 rating (apparently highest in the area) doing what he was hired to do, and the station/ESPN didn't seem to care. So now he gets fired for the same thing? I don't think that is fair to him, even if he is a jerk at times. I don't condone what he said, but it seems kind of hypocritical to me.

I listen on espnradio.com here at work everyday, so i have no direct ties to the station. But I won't listen to the pittsburgh selection anymore probably. Maybe every so often to catch up on what they are talking about and closer to training camp.

I'm not in Pittsburgh to hear this jag-off but if I would have heard that statement come out of his mouth I would have been at the steps of the radio station waiting for this punk. I would have promptly gave him the beat down of his life and proclaim "he had it coming to him from my prison cell."

No freakin' 8 year old or anybody else for that matter has it coming to them sitting in the stands of a hockey game.

Yes, absolutely deplorable. I never heard that before. Kind of makes my previous post about the hypocrisy less warranted.

I just can't fathom anyone saying that publicly. I can't believe he still had a job let alone his life after that statement. Dude, I am fired up this morning hearing this.

good Pittsburgh sporting news without the content being littered with his shock

And thats my rub with him. He just picks his targets on what will get him more heat, therefore raising his ratings. His attacks on Hines ward, perhaps one of the toughest receivers of all time, and calls him Wines Hard (which was funny) but common', Seriously, going after Hines Ward because he held out once?

I'm very disappointed to hear Mark Madden was fired. I always hoped Madden would have a radio show long enough to be assassinated live on the air by the family of an 8 year old girl.

He doesn't like Ward because Madden claims that Ward allegedly got him fired
from his television show. He also seems to hate Bettis and calls him a phoney
all the time.

The saddest part, and Mark knows this, by the time the summer is over, he will be hired by fox and will end up in the same time slot.

Well at least I can enjoy the next 3 months.

There are only 3 things that MM could ever speak with any knowledge-- Hockey, Pro Wrestling, and soccer. Any other sport, he would just regurgitate others' thoughts.

I have never listened to madden being that I don't live in the east, and I could really give a crap about the Kennedy statement (can you spell Chappaquitick?), and its the first I have heard about the "8 year old girl", but isn't this why they have ratings? If you don't like a radio personality, don't listen to them. Why do the need to fire the guy? Just like the moron Imus, and his comment about the "nappy headed hoes". I saw those chicks, and they might not have been whores, but a few of them are nappy headed.

I don't understand why you fire a shock jock for saying something shocking. Instead turn the channel and let the ratings take him off the air.
