I got this PM from the Moderators over there. I found it interesting. I guess they don't want people leaving? Even thought I kinda got the go ahead and leave feeling from them....Anyway....

Just to let you know, we are upgrading our servers and we have acknowledged the issue despite what other people on the board say.

Thanks.

Nice. Way to market people on the way out the door. Sounds like the old company I worked for. You offer great (smart) suggestions to help out a department that even have some backing by your peers, only to continually be neglected. Then when you say you are resigning, they want to offer you a new title, more money and whatever else. Too late fokkers.

Well it's a start at least they are addressing the issues brought up to them. I can't go back now I love my sig to much. Dang Asian, he had to do a great job on mine.

...Interesting that some got it and some didn't.... Guess we know who the "other people" are that they're referring to.... Wonder who "The Management" is...

SMG/FLA=other people

And I started all of my correspondence very pleasant. Why shouldn't I? I mean I had a great relationship with the mods. They were always very responsive. But 9 PMs over a 3 month period went unanswered. I even sent emails to the director of online services for the trib...nothing. When I finally go public they finally respond with a "leave we dont really give a ish". For the record when they did email me...I did say that they told me the servers are being addressed. I said that publically at least 3 times. So now they are playing victim and yes they are trying to prevent anymore bleeding of membership. They could have prevented any ill will by just responding to PMs. These PMs I sent by the way were mainly technical issues and requests for stickies.

I guess I'm not important enough because I didn't get one.

Maybe if I started whining like Benny about how nobody likes me they'll send one.

I never got one. Just another way that board was trying to keep a yellow man down.
As for the gesture of good will on their behalf.... why couldn't they at least posted some kind of thread when all this talk was happening, to let the membership know that they are aware of the issues and they want to deal with them. Everytime I go back there there's like 1 or 2 logged on... maybe because of the offseason, maybe because of the mass exodus.

They could have the absolute best servers known to man...as long as they don't get rid of the people who are there to do nothing but cause problems and instigate then forget about it.

This is the place for me now.

That's my chief complaint about that place.

The site performance bugs me. Hopefully they do address that. But, then again, most sites go through performance problems from time to time. Stillernation did. This one will.

I wish the mods would be more communicative or at least establish a forum for complants and respond there (not in the Steelers forum).

The trolls don't bother me as much as they do some of you. Despite the trolls, it used to be MUCH worse in the days of Crash/PirogiPete battles or Crash/S43. Sure they annoy me sometimes and I banter with them or call them out. But usually, they amuse me. But then again I am mostly amused by things that anger other people.

Harry N is not for real. You guys have to quit thinking he is. He is an intentional instigator. Same with HHH. Hyperbole and outrageous statements are theire SOP.

I'll tell ya...any place that doesn't listen to membership about their wants for the community will die off. Most members wanted guys like Harry gone. Couple that with tech issues and petty deletion of posts making light of the trolls (ie LoD), and the lack of communication...and you are asking people to leave. Just my 2 cents.

And I don't mean to sound negative but one other thing:

I will probably read both sites. The color scheme and proliferation of Sig files will probably relegate this site to night/after the kid and wife are in bed. (probably not so much at work).

The problem with private sites are 2-fold

1 -- how do you get a continual influx of fresh blood - which is needed. You may be able to get 100 or so members or maybe a little more, but how (other than word of mouth) do you keep them coming in. I enjoy the constant influx of new knowlege/ideas/perspectives that the TL can provide (after all -- I remember when NKY, Stlrz D, AA, Les, and FLA came aboard). And that site will always be able to generate an influx. After the stillernation split, there was a lull -- and then it built back up again. I don't know how a private site does that.

2 -- This site is someone's hobby. It is an awesome looking site. And has great functionality, etc, don't get me wrong -- but can it handle a load. What happens if it crashes, what happens if JH takes a vacation and the site has problems, or he gets fried doing it? What is is DR (Disaster Recovery) strategy. All of these things come into play when you start attaching importance to a web site and make it "mission critical".

Anyway, don't get me wrong -- I am not trying to be negative. Nor am I a TL apologist, per se, just pointing out some other things to consider. I will continue to read and post to both sites.

I probably need to make a decision on whether or not I look at SN or 1S. There are a few posters on those sites that I consider must reads (Hogefan, Steel Tsar, ChemSteel).

Maybe they will come here and make my life easier. Because it IS all about me.

MJG...I hear what you are saying. I think people's distaste for certain events are multifactoral. While trolls are an issue they are far from the only issue. I think all of this could have been stemed with communication.

Your employer applauds your restraint. Now get back to work.

I agree and understand what you're saying MJG, which is why despite my disdain for the mods over there, I'm going to continue posting at the Trib (although not nearly as much). I'm hoping this core group expands quite a bit and if we have a lot of crossover then this site is going to be mentioned often over there and will be able to attract new folks.

FLA... looking at your sig.... Your Photoshop skills are extra-ordinary.

BTW, would you PM Les with the altered Sig you created. With the Black background, it looks better. Two heads are better than one.

MJG,

All very legitimate concerns.

I have stated that if the season traffic causes this site problems, it will be fixed by upgrading the server. I am currently putting together a "disaster plan" if something bad were to happen such as database corruption. I wonder if the tribune has a plan in place to address the problems when user's can't post, or access their board. It doesn't seem like they do. The trib's message board is also almost a year old still running phpBB 2 which is a spam / security concern for them.

In addition, I do work a typical M-F 8:30 to 5:30 which makes it difficult to be on Planet Steelers full-time. Your right, currently this is a hobby, but I hope that it becomes more than that in the future. Time will tell though. As you all can tell, I have not been posting a lot. I am spending a lot of time trying to join exchange programs, swapping links, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and general advertising of Planet Steelers. This is a cumbersome and time consuming process but this will address your concern of getting new members to this board. It will take time, and it won't happen over night, but this is key to making Planet Steelers one of the largest Pittsburgh Steelers dedicated communities on the internet... and that is my goal.

My job is to serve this community. I find it unacceptable that the TR website performs so poorly especially considering the financing that they have available. They have money & staff dedicated to those sites (ie. SteelersLive) as their full-time job and it doesn't seem like they care too much about their members which is a shame. I will not let that happen to Planet Steelers.

I was slightly disappointed with how they approached the archiving of the PhotoShopper contests too. So much dedication and hard work was put forth to organize those contests and I feel they should have made an effort to store those in their gallery. I took it upon myself to archive them on Planet Steelers.

If you all have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

Thanks.

Shawn
