Butler Likes His Chances Of Beating Out Kapinos For The Steelers Punting Job

Undrafted free agent punter Drew Butler likes his chances of beating out Jeremy Kapinos in training camp and he said as much in an interview last week on 680 The Fan.

Butler of course is the son of former Chicago Bears kicker Kevin Butler, who kicked for 13 seasons in the NFL. Drew, like his dad, played at the University of Georgia, where he won the Ray Guy Award in 2009.

Butler was asked last week if he was pleased to land with the Steelers. "Without a doubt. I mean the Pittsburgh Steelers are/is the best organization in the National Football League. There's no doubt about it," said Butler. Read more [...]

Steelers 2012 Training Camp Is Do Or Die Time For Linebacker Mortty Ivy

One player that I will be watching closely this preseason is Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker Mortty Ivy. Ivy, who was originally signed in 2009 as an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia by the Carolina Panthers, is believed to be out of practice squad eligibility now after stints on the practice squads of the Panthers, Miami Dolphins, St. Louis Rams and the Steelers. Should that indeed be the case, Ivy enters training camp in a do or die situation.

Last year in training camp there was a lot of buzz about Ivy and a few in the media liked his chances at making the Steelers 53 man roster. Read more [...]

Hines Ward Says He Thinks Bounties Went On Throughout The League

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said last Friday on WFNZ Radio in Charlotte that he thinks bounty type systems went on throughout the league, but that he also thinks that players need to just deal with the discipline that Roger Goodell hands down now because of the power that they gave him when they ratified the new CBA last off-season.

When Ward was asked specifically on The Mack Attack Show if he thought bounties went on throughout the league, Ward replied, "I think it went on throughout the league, but at the same time it's uncalled for," said Ward. "The teams, such as Read more [...]

Seattle Seahawks Top Pittsburgh Steelers for NFL’s Best Defense, According to PFW Readers

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

Pro Football Weekly polled its readers in a tournament-style feature to determine the league's top defense, and according to them, the Seattle Seahawks take home the honors.

No information is present to confirm the mental condition of the readers, but their voices were made loud and clear, the league's seventh-ranked scoring defense was actually the best.

Needless to say, their writers selected the Steelers by an overwhelming margin, and statistics certainly back that up.

But the fans are in the driver's seat in this one (a poll on the side of the PFW web page has the Seahawks up 1,066 to 195, and their Facebook page, which seems to be the official vote, has Seattle ahead 369 to 19), and nowhere is this more evident than the Seahawks gigantic semifinal upset over San Francisco. The Seahawks took 69 percent of the vote over a team that allowed 14.3 points per game.

Apparently they're forgetting the 24-0 beat down the Steelers put on the Seahawks in Week 2, a game in which Steelers WR Mike Wallace put a season's worth of hurting on CB Brandon Browner (who, somehow, made the Pro Bowl in 2011). Add in the fact the Seahawks offense (to be fair, no one's confusing them with the 98 Vikings) didn't reach midfield until the third quarter, and the fact the Steelers allowed five less points per game, it's tough to make an argument a reasonably-minded person wouldn't see the Steelers as the better defensive team.

The Steelers defeated Baltimore in the semifinals, which seems about right.

To give Seattle some credit, they do have a young defense on the rise, and with the selection of the Scourge of Jimmy John's, Bruce Irvin, and the free agent acquisition of DL Jason Jones, they're a team on the rise.

They're just nowhere near the Steelers' level right now.

Taylor Thinks Mike Wallace Will Show Up to Training Camp

Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace is the only restricted free agent who hasn’t signed his one-year tender. The Steelers opted to not reduce the one-year tender which they could have.

Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor said he believes Wallace will be in camp.

At his football camp in Louisiana, Taylor told told Albert Buford of New Orleans Times-Picayune, “He’s going to be there (training camp). They’ll get it done. When you talk about that kind of money, it’s not an overnight type of deal. By the end of the day, I think for sure he’s going to get that thing done. Both sides are working together, so that’s a good thing.”

Ray Rice Thinks Joe Flacco Should Think He’s the NFL’s Best QB

Ray Rice is yet another Raven that likes to come up with excuses. This time he’s speaking out for his fellow loudmouth QB – Joe Flacco, who as we all know seems to think he’s the best QB in the NFL (insert punchline here).

Flacco is looking for a new deal and in an interview with 790 The Zone in Atlanta, Rice says that Flacco should get the deal – this based on the QB outplaying future Hall of Famer Tom Brady in the AFC Title Game.

Yes, the same title game the Ravens lost.

“It was his show. It was his show on offense and as much credit that I was getting and as much respect I was getting from defenses, all Joe really had to do is prove that we can drive the ball down the field and score, and he did that,” Rice said in the interview. “Quite frankly, he outplayed Tom Brady the last game. He outplayed Tom Brady, and Tom Brady — he’s the trademark for a quarterback. So Joe Flacco feeling the way he feels is only right, because he did it on a high level. He did it on the peak of his performance.”

The Ravens and Flacco have not come to terms as of yet. Then again, what exactly is the “best QB in the NFL” worth these days? I’m sure Flacco will come up with an amount that he feels is worth it, and his buddy Rice will probably back him up on it.

My Pittsburgh Steelers Dream 53 Man Roster (Not a Predicition)

With rookie camps in the books and all 32 NFL teams preparing for full blown training camps, it is time to take a look at the roster of my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. What I am going to offer is not a prediction of the final 53 man roster like some have done, but my ideal 53 man roster I’d love to see including who I’d place on the practice squad.
Ben Roethlisberger(Starter)Charlie BatchByron Leftwich
This is a pretty obvious depth chart. Troy Smith was released, but I still like rookie Jerrod Johnson to make the practice squad.
Running Backs(4)
Isaac Redman(starter)Chris RaineyBaron BatchJohn Clay
With Rashard Mendenhall likely to start the year on the PUP list, the Steelers have to hope this committee can get it done. Honestly I doubt Mendenhall plays this year at all, and maybe never again as a Steeler so this is an audition for all these backs.

On Tuesday Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor said for the second time in less than a week that he thinks restricted free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace will be in training camp at some point with a new contract.

"Mike's going to be there," said Taylor on Trib Live Radio. "I'm sticking my neck out, but heck, I'm going to go on and say it, Mike Wallace is going to be there for training camp."

Taylor, who appears every Tuesday on The Ike Taylor Show hosted by John Harris, also added, "I think Mike is finally seeing the business side of this football and I know for sure they're going Read more [...]
