Fans Speculate On Steelers’ 1st Round Draft Choice

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It’s time to talk some football.

The 2012 NFL Draft kicks off tonight with the first round and everyone is talking about who the Steelers will choose with their first pick.

You may not know this, but tonight marks the beginning of a holy season – if you will – for Pittsburgh Steelers fans.

So, the question is, who are the Black and Gold going take in the first few rounds.

The draft is a process of weeding the potential superstars from the budding draft day duds, and there is a name on a lot of Steelers’ fans’ minds.

“Hightower, I think is one of them,” said Steelers’ fan Carl Kusar. “That’s about it; that’s the only one I’m hearing.”

Dont’a Hightower is a linebacker for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He’s a big body, has a strong build and is a very physical player with the frame to disrupt plays at the line of scrimmage.

But then, there’s the offense too.

Offensive line,” said John Flint, another fan. “Ben’s been getting beat up for many years now, and it would definitely be nice to have somebody good up there besides Pouncey [who has] been hurt for the last two years.”

If you don’t think the first round is that big of a deal, keep this in mind, there are seven Steelers in the Hall of Fame who were first round draft picks.

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — The Pittsburgh Steelers cut two players from their off-season roster Wednesday: running back Chad Spann and cornerback Antonio Smith.

Spann was signed to the practice squad in December and eventually made his way on to the active roster. He played in Pittsburgh’s first round playoff loss at Denver.

Smith signed with the Steelers in January after the season had ended.

UDFA QB Alex Tanney Leaves Steelers for Buffalo

Chuck Finder of CBS Sports reported Friday morning undrafted free agent QB Alex Tanney has left the Steelers, opting to go through rookie minicamp with the Buffalo Bills instead.

Finder wrote Tanney, a Monmouth product, went to Buffalo due to the fact the Steelers brought in Oregon QB Darron Thomas, and apparently, didn’t want to compete against him.

Thomas is in the athletic mold the Steelers seem to like in their project back-up quarterbacks. Another Oregon product, Dennis Dixon, served as the Steelers back-up until he became a free agent in 2012.

Dixon has not yet signed anywhere else, and has previously made mention of wanting to go somewhere he could compete for a starting job either now or in the future.

The Steelers also signed former Ravens quarterback Troy Smith to a futures contract this off-season. Both of whom can claim their mobility and athleticism as their biggest strengths.

Adding Thomas in the fold, Tanney must not have seen the Steelers as the best option for him to catch on to either the practice squad or the 53-man roster.

Looks like we won’t see the “Trick Shot QB” in black and gold after all.

Balled Too Hard? Timetable for Terrell Suggs’ Return to Baltimore Varies

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

The timetable on the return of njured Ravens DE Terrell Suggs, as well as the severity of his injury, are jumping around, much like a football player does when playing pick-up basketball in the offseason.

Suggs told his followers on Twitter he plans to play in 2012, which isn’t all that shocking of a statement. His ability to play, and the quality of his game upon his return is more of the question.

At the heart of the matter, though, is whether Suggs – or any NFL player under contract – is allowed to collect contract money in a year in which they are injured during a non-football activity that could result in injury.

Despite several reports suggesting the injury itself could cost him the season, Suggs told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols (who reported via Twitter) it’s only a partial tear of his Achilles, and he expects to play in 2012.

With that proclamation in mind, it’s fair to point out most players have team-added clauses in their contracts which would not cover non-football injuries. Also, Suggs has said he did not injure it playing basketball, he injured it in conditioning drills while working out in Arizona.

One could make the argument playing basketball is a conditioning drill, however, and that’s very often where players would stand on the issue. Playing basketball assumes certain risk of injury, just like running a wind sprint does (just ask Steelers RT Willie Colon). Both obviously help a player in the conditioning process.

His contract aside, it would seem more logical for Suggs to do everything he could to get on the field, in the event the Ravens press the issue and look to void out certain monies from his deal.

So his return could mean he comes back at less than 100 percent, something the Ravens may not want, and be motivated to pay him all the same to prevent further injury if he’s forced to return earlier than he probably should.

It’s the dirty side to the game, and many would simply hope an organization like Baltimore would pinch pennies (even if it’s a few billion pennies) and force a cornerstone defensive player to risk further injury at an increasing age (Suggs turns 30 in October).

Steelers Release RB Chad Span, CB Antonio Smith

In wake of the recent NFL Draft, the Steelers have parted ways with two players – CB Antonio Smith and RB Chad Spann.

Spann is the more well known of the two, having been the practice squad call-up in the Steelers’ 2012 season of dreams for back-up running backs. After RB Rashard Mendenhall and Jonathan Dwyer were both placed on the IR, and RB Mewelde Moore nursing a knee injury, Spann joined fellow practice squad mate John Clay on the active roster for the 29-23 (OT) loss at Denver.

Smith was picked up during the off-season, after initially joining the NFL with the Browns in 2009. His release could have been prompted by the seventh-round selection of Texas A&M CB Terrence Frederick, a smart zone corner who is most likely a developmental project at this point. After posting a 4.55 40-yard dash time at the Combine, he ran a 4.42 at his pro day.
