Steelers Sign QB Byron Leftwich

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — The Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Byron Leftwich came to terms on a one-year contract Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Leftwich has spent three seasons in the Steelers organization. He played and won a Super Bowl with the Steelers in the 2008-09 season, and has spent the last two seasons in Pittsburgh while suffering through injury woes.

Leftwich missed the entire 2011 season with an arm injury.

In his career as a Steeler, Leftwich has completed 26-of-43 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns. He has over 10,000 career passing yards and 60 career touchdown passes.

Leftwich fills out the Steelers quarterback depth chart. The Steelers recently signed Charlie Batch to go along with starter Ben Roethlisberger.

Steelers Draft Offensive Guard David DeCastro In First Round

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Stanford offensive guard David DeCastro with the No. 24 selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.

DeCastro was projected as high at the No. 11 pick in various CBSSports.com mock drafts, and projected as the top offensive guard in the draft. He stands 6-foot-5, 316 pounds.

“Everything we would ask him to do we saw him do at Stanford, whether it was pulling or pass protection” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after drafting DeCastro. “… He’s a tough guy. He has a lot of attributed we think will help our football team.”

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was equally impressed. Many were, considering DeCastro was responsible for allowing just one sack in his college career.

It came as a freshman.

“There were several players still available, again surprisingly, for us David was the guy,” Colbert said. “He’s great at the line of scrimmage, he can pull, he can trap, he’s a solid pass protector. Really, the kid is good.”

Colbert also said that DeCastro was one of the players the Steelers identified as worth trading up for in the draft. The way things played out, a trade wasn’t necessary.

DeCastro’s former coach and teammates have high praise for him, pointing out his role as a leader for the Cardinal and his approach to the game.

Stanford head coach David Shaw said DeCastro expects players around him to have a heightened focus and work ethic.

“He arrives angry and focused and expects everybody else to be the same,” Shaw told CBSSports.com. “If he thinks something needs to be said, he says it and when he speaks the players listen.”

First-overall pick, quarterback Andrew Luck said DeCastro has had a business-like attitude for a long time, which many would argue will help him transition to the next level.

“He is so serious he sometimes thinks a high five after a touchdown is too frivolous because it might break concentration,” Luck told CBSSports.com. “But the person he is hardest on is himself.”

DeCastro grew up in a family of athletes, with his father and grandfather being former rugby players in South Africa.

He is the third straight early-round selection for the Steelers along the offensive line. Two years ago they drafted center Maurkice Pouncey and selected tackle Marcus Gilbert with their second-round pick last year.

Operating in a pro-style offense at Stanford, some draft experts think DeCastro can step in and start in the NFL this coming season.

David DeCastro Glad To Be A Steeler

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Pittsburgh Steelers introduced their first-round draft pick to reporters Friday afternoon.

As David DeCastro posed for pictures with his new Steelers jersey, team president Art Rooney II joked the newest Steeler may have already set an unofficial record.

“I think David may have set the record for the shortest time between being drafted and being on a plane to Pittsburgh,” Rooney said.

After being drafted shortly before 11 p.m. ET, DeCastro has been on a whirlwind that brought him from the West Coast on very little sleep.

“Yeah, I’m still trying to catch my breath,” he said. “Bunch of text messages, bunch of phone calls, a bunch of people saying, ‘Congrats.’ Just an exciting time.”

DeCastro made his first appearance as a Steeler Friday and he fit right in.

“Definitely a life-changing moment,” he said. “As far as the Steelers, I was really excited. Obviously the organization, team speaks for itself. Arguably one of the best if not the best fanbase in the world. I’m just excited – great football town, great football city and couldn’t be happier, really.”

The Steelers never expected to land a player like DeCastro who was expected to be drafted much higher in the first round.

“Getting picked by the Steelers definitely helped overcome any disappointment,” he said. “It really wasn’t much and I didn’t go in with any expectations. I knew the draft there’s a ton of variables and a lot of stuff that can happen with all the trades and whatnot and the Steelers picked me – I was more than overjoyed.”

Rookie OG David DeCastro Mistakes Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger for Travel Secretary

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

Steelers first round draft pick David DeCastro is known for being a serious guy.

Now that he’s become the highest-drafted Steelers guard in a long time, he’s got no time to waste. That’s probably why, when contacted by the man he’ll protect, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, DeCastro didn’t ask him about the offense or extend platitudes about the two-time Super Bowl champion’s career.

DeCastro asked him if Roethlisberger had received his flight plans for his impending arrival.

It’s safe to assume most NFL quarterbacks aren’t mistaken for NFL team travel coordinators, but that’s what Buck Frank of the Altoona Mirror said, quoting Roethlisberger from 25th anniversary of the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

“He just kept saying ‘did you get those travel plans, did you get those travel plans,” Roethlisberger said. “I can’t wait once we get started on him about that.”

It’s definitely a man bites dog story. The rookies typically have some kind of initiation to the team, like, carrying bags or buying food.

Falcons veteran offensive tackle Tyson Clabo tweeted after his team drafted Wisconsin offensive lineman Peter Konz in the second round, “Peter Konz…… Welcome and on Fridays I like Chick-fil-a chicken biscuits.” It’s safe to say DeCastro will make a run or two to Sheetz for some pretzel bread chicken sandwiches anyway, but this story will likely get him to pull a carried bag or two.

It’s likely something DeCastro will hear about off and on for the rest of his career, which looks to be an outstanding one.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Steelers have come to terms with Byron Leftwich.

The bringing back of Leftwich means that he will be back with backup QB Charlie Batch, who inked a deal with the Steelers earlier in free agency.

Batch and Leftwich were each unrestricted free agents as is another, Dennis Dixon, who is not expected to resign with the Steelers.

Leftwich one-year deal expected to be $ 825,000 plus signing bonus & should come with reduced cap hit of $ 540,000 plus signing bonus.
