Steelers select Sean Spence LB Miami in Round 3

The Steelers selected Sean Spence in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.  Spence was a guy who the Steelers worked out at his pro day.  Spence is 5’11 and 230 lbs.  The Steelers will most likely look at Spence as an inside linebacker in their system.
He is very athletic and will make tackles from sideline to sideline.  He also is a very instinctive player.  He can be a three down linebacker because of how good his cover skills are.  This kid can drop in coverage and play the ball very well.
Spence may have to bulk up a little bit to make the transition to ILB.  Spence did not show good strength at the combine.  He can get caught up in traffic.  His run support will have to improve but with today’s NFL he could succeed in the position.
Not a bad end to day 2.  The Steelers still have 7 picks tomorrow.  It will be a long day full of new guys to improve the team.

The Steelers introduced their latest first round draft pick, OG David DeCastro, and the story is very simple; the best possible player fell to Pittsburgh at No. 24. It couldn't have finished any better for Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Friday and Saturday, though, are the picks that ultimately take contenders to championships. It's about depth. It's about finding Maurkice Pouncey in the first, and backing him up with Antonio Brown in the 6th.

There may be a few of those kinds of players available over the next two days, and those players are profiled and highlighted on NFL Network all weekend.

We'll continue following the Steelers' picks, providing as much insight as we can, but we welcome any and all analysis of your own. Teach, tell, share and speculate, it's the most interactive and fun time of the year for fans.

Steelers and Dont’a Hightower can’t shake each other

The draft process is usually something like a speed dating event where teams and players find themselves linked for short times before something happens to shake things up and everyone finds a new partner. There are exceptions, but usually at the top of the draft where teams know exactly who will be around. With teams…

Steelers re-sign QB Byron Leftwich

The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with veteran backup quarterback Byron Leftwich.

Terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed.

Leftwich missed the entire 2011 season after breaking his left arm in the preseason. The 32-year-old Leftwich has thrown just seven passes since the Steelers signed him in 2010.

Leftwich spent the first four seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being drafted seventh overall in the 2003 NFL Draft. He moved to Atlanta in 2007, signed with the Steelers for the 2008 season and played for Tampa Bay in 2009 before returning to Pittsburgh.

The Steelers expect Leftwich to compete with Charlie Batch for the backup spot behind Ben Roethlisberger. Leftwich has thrown 10,260 yards and 58 touchdowns and 41 interceptions in his career.

Steelers Get Stanford OG David DeCastro with 24th Pick

Many have called for the Steelers to upgrade their offensive line this offseason, and Thursday night they did so with the picking of David DeCastro, a guard from Stanford, in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

“We had identified some players we would trade up to get, and DeCastro was one of them,” Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said of the pick.

DeCastro has been a terrific lineman at Stamford the past three years and is a dominant run blocker who also handles the opposition in pass protection.

He has a lot of upside and should break into a starting lineup early into his NFL career and stay there for years to come. Explosive off the snap, quickly gets into blocks and easily turns defenders from the line.

DeCastro is a solid run blocker who opens up big lanes for the ballcarrier and works hard until the whistle blows.

He is regarded as the best guard in the draft, and the Steelers are lucky that he fell to the 24th pick, and he should be an immediate upgrade on the Steelers O-line.

Pittsburgh Steelers select David DeCastro, Grade A

This is why the Pittsburgh Steelers are consistently among the elite teams in the NFL. They’re patient on draft day, and never out-think themselves. They probably didn’t expect to come away with David DeCastro in this draft, but he was simply too good to pass up here. It’s a great value pick and also fills a glaring hole on the offensive line.
