Steelers look to expand Heinz Field by 3,000 seats

One of the strengths of the NFL is that some of the teams in the smallest markets are also some of the teams with the strongest fan bases. And in Pittsburgh, the Steelers are finding that they have a bigger fan base than they can accommodate at Heinz Field. The Steelers always sell out their…

Trai Essex Will Be Back in Pittsburgh Again

Steelers OL Trai Essex doesn't have one position.

He has five.

And the versatility he's shown in the seven years with the team has earned him an eighth.

Essex signed a one-year deal with the offensive line-thin Steelers today, after playing in all 16 games in 2011. He was picked up as a free agent during training camp, and worked his way to three starts.

While one year contracts for veterans like Essex do not assure them a spot on the roster, the fact he was signed now instead of during training camp has to suggest he's in their plans one way or another.

Perhaps it's for continuity. I'm not sure if any other Steelers linemen has ever started at least one game at all five offensive line positions, but Essex can't be far from that. He played at all five in 2011.

Essex won't be confused for the modern day Anthony Munoz, but the veteran has plenty of experience, and will be counted on to help transition what could be a younger offensive line in 2012.

Steelers re-sign WR Jerricho Cotchery

The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery.

Cotchery posted the message ''Let me see ya towels'' on his Twitter account Wednesday after agreeing to a two-year deal worth around $ 3 million. The 29-year-old Cotchery had 16 receptions for 237 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games with Pittsburgh last season. He had a 31-yard touchdown reception during an overtime playoff loss to the Denver Broncos.

Cotchery gives the Steelers much-needed depth at wide receiver following the retirement of Hines Ward and the release of veteran Arnaz Battle. The Steelers have signed restricted free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace to a first-round tender.

If Wallace returns, Cotchery will likely compete for the third-receiver spot with Emmanuel Sanders behind Pro Bowlers Wallace and Antonio Brown.

Steelers David Johnson Signs RFA Tender

Steelers back up tight end/fullback David Johnson signed his RFA tender according to rotoworld.  Johnson will make $ 1.26 million this season.  He will now be fighting for playing time with Leonard Pope, Weslye Saunders and Will Johnson.  Johnson has been the teams main fullback in the past few seasons.  Will Johnson may take that role this year.  With the signing of Leonard Pope, Johnson must have thought it was time to get into offseason programs to keep his job.
I am not nor have I ever been a fan of Johnson.  He is not a good blocker and he is no threat in the passing game other than teams forget about him because he never does anything.  He will be here for this season and that may be it.
