More Steelers Players Revealed As AFC Pro Bowl Alternates

Ed Bouchette reports this afternoon that a few more Steelers players were named as 2012 Pro Bowl alternates on Tuesday. Ben, Pouncey Could Play In Regular Season Finale

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Steelers will close out the regular season against the Cleveland Browns Sunday afternoon.

It looks like the Steelers could be getting some key players back into the lineup for this important game.

Head coach Mike Tomlin would not rule out Ben Roethlisberger this weekend against the Browns.

“Hopefully we get all of those guys back,” Tomlin said in his weekly press conference Tuesday. “It’s our intention right now if the guys are healthy enough to practice and prepare, of course we will play them.”

Roethlisberger missed last week’s win against the St. Louis Rams with an ankle injury sustained the last time the Steelers and Browns met.

In fact, the only people who appear unlikely to play are Mewelde Moore and Doug Legursky.

“Some guys probably on the outside looking in from a health standpoint…Mewelde Moore continues to work his way back from his MCL sprain,” Tomlin said. “Doug Legursky is probably going to be a week away with his left shoulder. We’ll make the necessary adjustments there.

“All the other guys that have existing injuries or missed the last performance due to injury are in play as we sit here today.”

LaMarr Woodley and Maurkice Pouncey could also be available, but there is no definitive word either way.

Should Pouncey returm, it would mean Trai Essex would not have to make his first career start at the center position.

Essex filled in at the center spot against the Rams on an emergency basis after Legursky went down with a shoulder injury.

A first round bye for the Steelers is still within their reach, but they do not control their own destiny.

For it to happen, the Steelers need to win and the Baltimore Ravens need to lose to the Cincinnati Bengals.

In that scenario, the Steelers would take the AFC North title and earn the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. That’s also assuming that the New England Patriots take care of business against the Buffalo Bills.

Should the Steelers win and the Ravens and Patriots lose, the Steelers would clinch the top spot in the AFC and have home field advantage for the playoffs.

Tomlin said that the team will need to be focused on the opponent in front of them and not be concerned with what is happening in other stadiums this weekend.

Charley Casserly Likes The Bengals Chances This Weekend

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) – Former NFL General Manager and current NFL Today football analyst Charlie Casserly, joined The Fan Morning Show Wednesday to discuss the NFL playoff picture.

Charlie believes the Bengals have a great shot to beat the Ravens this week. The last time these teams squared off in Baltimore, the Bengals played without standout wide receiver A.J. Green.

Green will play this week and Casserly believes he may make the difference.

Charlie and the guys look at the rest of the playoff picture and try to project the teams to make this year’s NFL playoffs.

Brett Keisel Not Even Named a Pro Bowl Alternate? The Beard was Snubbed

Now this is just wrong.  Keisel is having his best season.  What he has had to play through this season is unreal.  He is part of the number one defensive unit in the NFL and he is making plays every game.
Keisel has had to work through so much this year.  He has had to play without Casey Hampton for 3 games on his inside.  That does not even count that Hampton’s back up Chris Hoke has missed the entire season.  Keisel had to do more to stop the run then ever before with the lack of a middle presence in many games.
Keisel has been working with less then usual on his outside shoulder as well.  He also has had to play without James Harrison for 5 games with an eye injury and suspension.  During that time Lawrence Timmons replaced Harrison.  That meant Larry Foote came off the bench for Timmons in the middle.  Keisel had no help around him.  He had to protect inside, outside and his back side due to injuries.
Keisel helped lead the Steelers the to the number one overall defense. ...

Steelers Want Roethlisberger In Sunday For at Least 25-30 Snaps

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger

Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has a “shot” to play Sunday in Cleveland, and now there’s word that the team really doesn’t want him to sit for two straight games getting set for the postseason.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says that the Steelers want Roethlisberger to play about 25-30 snaps against the Browns.

Roethlsiberger playing is interesting, since it’s up in the air if the Steelers will have to play in wild card weekend or not. The Steelers are hopeful they can win and then the Ravens will lose in Cincy.

If that happens, the Steelers will have a week off and won’t play until Saturday, January 14th or Sunday, January 15th. If Roethlsiberger doesn’t play at all Sunday, and they do get the bye, that’s 26 or 27 days since he would have last played, and the team doesn’t want him sitting that long.

Expect the team to be careful with him, but for him to play Sunday – even if it’s just for a quarter or half.

Ryan Clark Discusses Win Over Rams, Looks Ahead To Browns

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — The Ryan Clark show with Andrew Fillipponi is once again live from Nakama.

Ryan would love to meet some NBA players, but he doesn’t get the chance.

Once his career is over, Ryan thinks he would like to coach.

Ryan remembers back to the humble beginnings of his career.  It’s rare in this game to develop really close friendships, but Ryan’s relationship with Troy Polamalu started with church and bible study.  Much of Troy’s workouts focus on honing reaction times. Troy is a rock star in Samoa.

There is a lot of movement and a lack of stability in the coaching profession.

Ryan is saddened by the sudden cold feet of a woman in need of advice who has decided not to discuss her love life on the air.

Ryan has enough faith in his own fashion sense to say if an outfit looks good.  Ryan hates reality shows, but his wife loves them.

Ryan will go easy on New Years Eve since the Steelers have to play the next day.

NFL Notebook: Brees may sit as Brady goes for his record

A day after Sean Payton helped Drew Brees break the NFL's single-season passing record the coach wouldn't divulge whether he'd enable his star quarterback to maintain that distinction. With 5,087 yards passing this season after Monday night's victory against Atlanta, Brees enters the final week of the season 190 yards ahead of New England's Tom Brady.
