Houston Texans Sign Veteran QB Jake Delhomme

It was pretty obvious the Texans would have to sign a veteran to at least back up rookie T.J. Yates at quarterback.

It's interesting to find out they chose Jake Delhomme, a journeyman who last played in Cleveland in 2010.

Delhomme started four games for the Browns last season, compiling a 2-2 record that seemed to be in spite of him as opposed to because of him. He threw two touchdowns to seven interceptions in 149 attempts, and a passer rating of 62.4.

He was injured early in the Browns season, but came in rescue for Seneca Wallace in Week 5 against Atlanta. Then rookie Colt McCoy got the nod the next week against Pittsburgh.

Delhomme is reported to have beaten out another veteran, Jeff Garcia, for the job that's been wide open since starter Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart both suffered season-ending injuries. Yates will be the starter, the Texans say, more than likely due to his familiarity (albeit limited) experience in their offense.

Houston is currently the top seed in the AFC, and leads the Titans by two games in the AFC South. The Texans are the league's only franchise never to have qualified for the playoffs, and even with the savage rash of injuries they've taken to key players (Mario Williams is out for the year and Andre Johnson missed six games with a hamstring injury), they're poised to clinch a berth despite this set-back.

They have the games best rushing attack, and one of the top defensive units. They also have a key win over Pittsburgh from Week 4, and while unlikely to come to it, would beat Pittsburgh out for a wild card spot.
